Senior School Bulletin -Term 2, Week 7

I hope this letter finds you and your family well. Even though we are only part way through the current academic year, it is coming to the time for our Year 10 students to think about what they might like to do beyond school. One of the key aspects of this process is for students to think about their passions, interests, what they are good at and how they might bring these items together in their future life.

The Subject Selection Process plays a key role in shaping the remainder of your child's educational journey. We understand that choosing a pathway and subjects is a significant decision, one that requires careful consideration and discussion between parents, students, and teachers.

To make this process seamless we will be sharing a number of resources and tips over the coming months to help guide the conversations you have at home so that they align with the processes and support offered at the school. Please see below some important information and guidelines to assist you:

On Sunday 26 May, the Secondary Eisteddfod took place in the Barbara Godwin Performing Arts Complex (PAC). This year, the Eisteddfod expanded to include students from Years 6-12, with the largest number of competitors to date; a testament to the dedication shown by our students and the work they are doing with their music tutors.

The day showcased a range of students from beginner levels all the way through to our more seasoned performers. Audiences enjoyed a variety of musical performances from many different genres spanning almost 400 years; from Baroque to Rock! The standard was once again incredibly high, and our competitors exhibited confidence, musicality and professionalism.

The adjudicator for the event was Mr Cameron van Reyk who is the Head of Music at Wesley College. As well as being a leading educator, Cameron is a talented jazz saxophonist and choral director. He was thoroughly impressed with the calibre of students and said it was an absolute treat spending the day listening to great music. The following competitors have been recognised by our adjudicator for their stand-out performances. They will be presented with special medals at the Awards Assemblies early in Term 3. Congratulations to all involved!

St Marks has been provided with the new Australia Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sports. The safety and well-being of our students is paramount, and these guidelines aim to ensure prompt and appropriate action in the event of a concussion.

The mantra for these guidelines is simple: “If in doubt, sit them out”. This means that if there is any suspicion of concussion during school activities and after school activities, it is imperative to remove the student from play and seek appropriate medical attention.

Furthermore, we kindly request that parents notify our school nurse if a child has a sustained concussion outside of school hours. Please find attached the link to the guidelines for review and understanding.

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to the safety of our students.

We have received an increase in concerns raised over our School community's use of St Marks Drive during drop-off and pick-up times and not adhering to the traffic and road rules. For the safety of our students, please remember:

• St Marks Drive is a 40km/h School Zone between 7.30am - 9.00am and 2.30pm - 4.00pm.
  
  
• Please drive with caution and care.
  
  
• Please do not double park at any location, including (but not limited to): Kiss ‘n Drive points, St Marks Drive, School parking lots, access gates and across our neighbours’ driveways.
  
  
• Remember, during drop-off and pick-up times, the traffic in and around the School can get very heavy, and some behaviours put our students - your children - at risk. In particular, please be aware of double parking, overtaking and exiting the School, as these can limit driver and pedestrian fields of vision, and can cause accidents.
  
  
• Please do not overtake stationary cars on the School grounds, especially in Kiss ‘n Drive zones.
  
  
• When exiting the School grounds, please ensure you look both left and right carefully before re-entering St Marks Dr, particularly around our neighbour’s driveways.
  
  
• Please DO NOT park in our neighbourly businesses' carparks, including the Endeavour Centre, Mitre 10, Better Pets, AutoMasters, SuperCheap, and Whitford Family Centre. Should you require additional parking, Whitford Shopping Centre has kindly allowed us to use the bays next to Muzz Buzz.

Parents are encouraged to complete the Uniform Shop Survey to assist us in gaining insights into your experiences and expectations regarding the St Mark's Uniform Shop.

Following successful programs held in the previous school holidays, we are pleased to announce the ECU School of Engineering STEM School Holiday Program – CREATE will be offered in September 2024. The one day workshops will be held on 24, 25 & 26 September 2024. This program is offered at no cost to participating students.

CREATE is designed to support the teaching and learning of STEM subjects for students interested in STEM studies, and is suitable for students who will be enrolled in Years 9 to 12 in 2024.

Enclosed is a flyer outlining the program details along with the link to Trybooking. We kindly request you pass this to parents and/or students who will find this program beneficial. Places are still available and registration closes on 18 September 2024.

Did you know that our Old Scholars' Association Little Lions Playgroup is run on-site every Friday during term time? We'd love to see your little cub there this Friday!

Join us from 8.45 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. for lots of fun and games. Little Lions Playgroup is a community-based group run in conjunction with Playgroup WA and caters for children up to school age. Families attending our Kindy and not in session on Fridays are more than welcome to join as well.

Calling all Dad’s at St Mark’s! The POSTMEN are putting on our first ever “Dad’s Only” event to create an opportunity to build on the network of amazing Dads and Father Figures at the school. We’ll have a short discussion about the POSTMEN and rip into a comedy set featuring local comedians Tori Griffiths, David Tuffley and Jon Pinder!

Come join us for a Night at the Northshore in Kallaroo, $20 includes entry and a meal. Bar open for purchases.
