Senior School Bulletin - Term 3, Week 6

The "In Your Head" event by Zero2Hero was a significant mental health forum which took place on August 14, 2024, at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre. This annual event targets students, teachers, and parents, aiming to enhance understanding of adolescent mental health and provide practical skills for well-being. The forum includes keynote speakers, panel discussions, and workshops, attracting over 1,000 participants from schools across Western Australia.

Zero2Hero is a Western Australia-based charity focused on mental health awareness, founded by Ashlee Harrison. The organization conducts various programs, including leadership camps and forums like "In Your Head," to equip young people with the skills needed to support themselves and their peers in mental health matters.

A group of Year 11 & 12 students attended this event and learnt a lot about how to support a healthy mind.

We are thrilled to continue our event series, Career Conversations. This series will offer our Year 10-12 students valuable insights into tertiary education and various career paths from members of St Mark's community sharing their post-school experiences. Based on student feedback to our Futures Team, each session will highlight a different sector.

Our next Career Conversations event will focus on the Engineering/Mining, Environmental, and Marine/Maritime Sectors, featuring three speakers from these fields. Students interested in careers in these fields won’t want to miss this opportunity, and even if you’re undecided about your future career, come along to explore and understand what working in these sectors could be like!

On the 19th of June, the St Mark’s Literature and English ATAR classes departed school to visit Curtin University for a day, along with several other schools, for an English and Literature conference. The day involved attending lectures across the campus to further our understanding of several topics, such as “Composing”, “Voice”, and “Genre”. Students who attended had the opportunity to take notes like university students in several lectures while also being able to ask lots of questions and partake in discussions with qualified lecturers. This day at Curtin has personally improved my understanding of several topics within English ATAR and has provided many valuable resources and techniques to use in our final exams and assessments. Overall, the experience was fantastic and beneficial for all students who attended.

This is a short course that serves as a stepping stone to career pathways and ultimately employment in the following areas Cabling and Network Infrastructure Technicians, Network Engineers, Cyber Security Professionals, Electronic Security Technicians and Audio Visual (AV) Technicians.

If you are interested in a career in any of the above, then this hands-on, practical-focused training is where you start.
It is designed to take a student with minimum or no experience through the technical requirements to start their new career.
Students will learn how to install and test telecommunications cabling and outlets using specialist tools and test equipment
and much more.

Successful completion of this course will enable you to then get the practical knowledge needed to apply as part of an Open
Cabling Registration (License) to work in the telecommunications industry in Australia.

We are currently finalising the course dates and current year 12 students will be able to enrol in training from the 28th of October, once they finish the school year.

It is essential that all blazer orders for 2025 are placed as soon as possible. The blazer is compulsory for Years 6 to 12 in Terms 2 and 3. Final orders close on Wednesday 18th September.

We do make sure that the blazers are fitted with room for growth. A deposit of $100 will be required when placing your order.

We are open Monday & Wednesday 07:45am to 11:15am and Thursday 1pm to 4:30pm.

Our Year 12 students and Old Scholars are gearing up for the annual Kristian Hoogenkamp Memorial AFL Match. This match honours Kristian Hoogenkamp, our beloved Class of 2020 member, who bravely lost his battle to rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer, in 2019. This year, the Class of 2024 is taking it to the next level by raising funds for Sock it to Sarcoma through the Hoogenkamp Spirit Cup Raffle.

The raffle will be DRAWN FRIDAY 30 AUGUST 2024 at 3.00PM.

Sessions are broken up into two time slots, morning (08:00am to 12:00pm) and afternoon (1:00pm to 4:30pm).

The Hamersley Athletics Centre is excited to announce an upcoming Information Day scheduled for early September. We caters to a diverse age range, from Under 7s to Under 17s, and has recently expanded into senior athletes as well.

The Newman Breakers Water Polo Club at Newman College is set to become the new hub for aspiring young athletes with the introduction of exciting water polo opportunities. The local water polo club is reaching out to the school community with an invitation to explore its programs, designed for students of all skill levels.

The club offers a range of programs, including Flippa Ball for younger players and the Water Polo WA State League Junior programs for those looking to advance their skills. The club aims to provide a supportive environment for students to either start their water polo journey or further develop their existing abilities.

The Annual POSTMEN Games Day is on again! Saturday, September 14th, from 1pm to 5pm, presents an opportunity for Dads and Father Figures to bring along their kids to try some fun and interesting board games. Adam from BoardGamesDirect.com will help us again by bringing along some different games for us to play. The event will be suitable for kids of all ages, with something to appeal to everyone.

We’ll round the afternoon off with our much-loved Klask tournament and some pizza for an early dinner.

Did you know that our Old Scholars' Association Little Lions Playgroup is run on-site every Friday during term time? We'd love to see your little cub there this Friday!

Join us from 8.45 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. for lots of fun and games. Little Lions Playgroup is a community-based group run in conjunction with Playgroup WA and caters for children up to school age. Families attending our Kindy and not in session on Fridays are more than welcome to join as well.
