Congratulations to Year 6 student, Charlie, who represented WA in the School Sport Cross Country National Championships in South Australia in August. Charlie placed 24th out of 41 runners from across Australia and ran 3kms in 11.37 minutes.
Well done, Charlie!
Today, 7 September, is Duchenne Awareness Day, a rare condition that affects two students here at St Mark's. Our ELC wore a touch of red today to not only raise awareness of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy but also to show support to our students and their families who are affected.
World Duchenne Awareness Day is the official global annual campaign to raise awareness for people living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. The 7th day of the 9th month represents the 79 exons that make up the dystrophin gene, the longest gene in the human body. Just one tiny error in one of those exons causes Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy. Duchenne is a rare condition that causes progressive muscle damage leading to loss of muscle function and strength. This includes the muscles used for breathing, eating and the heart. Boys typically lose the ability to walk around the age of 10 to 12 years, and life expectancy is now in the mid to late 20s. There is currently no cure, although research into gene therapy and other treatments offers hope and quality of life.
Organisations such as Duchenne Australia strive for all people living with Duchenne to have access to evidence-based care and the best possible quality of life through advocacy for emerging therapies, research and clinical trials.
To find out more about Duchenne Awareness Day please head to their website.

Developed by the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA), $20 Boss is an in-school challenge run by teachers, which provides students $20 of start-up money to create their own business. At the end of the program, students pay back the start-up money and donate their profits to a chosen charity.
This year our Year 10 Business Management and Marketing students took part in the challenge. Students were engaged in an immersive experience at school, which developed their entrepreneurial spirit and developed an array of innovative businesses, including Eco Adore, Kohola Jewellery, Etheral Jewellery, Light Me Up Candles, Mini Basketball Games, Eco Passion Plants, Stress Less Stress Balls, Earthly Coco Bowls, QualiTEE, Timmys Infused Candles, Crazy Kitchen with crazy critters and cupcakes.
The excitement and interest were evident in all our students as crowds of students from Middle and Senior Schools arrived to purchase the products and examine the excellent work the BMM students had created.
Over $1100 was raised in profits and will be donated to Spinal Cords Injury Australia.
Congratulations to all students involved.

This term, our Year 11 ATAR and General Drama students will be presenting Geronimo!, an abridged version of Louis Nowra’s play The Summer of the Aliens:
The year is 1962 and the world is worrying about the Cuban missile crisis, except for Lewis, a youth on the cusp of manhood, growing up in a Melbourne housing commission suburb. He is preoccupied with flying saucers, much to the disgust of his friend Brian who can think only of losing his virginity. The play centres on relationships, especially the relationship between 14 year old Lewis and 14 year old Dulcie. It is through Dulcie that Lewis begins to understand that the struggle to be adult is the struggle to understand the world around him.
Dates: Thursday 15 and Saturday 17 September, 7pm – 8.30pm

On Monday night, the True Voices Vocal Ensemble competed in the Open Choir category of the North of Perth Festival.
Singing an a cappella version of Here Comes the Sun, followed by a challenging 6-part piece called Deep Peace, the choir were thrilled to place second with 86 points, close behind the Winthrop Singers, a university choir who won with 90 points.
It was an excellent experience for our singers to hear more experienced performers singing at such a high level, and the adjudicator gave us some very encouraging feedback.
Next week the Descant Get Enough Quartet will compete in the Open Vocal Ensemble (2-8 voices) division on Friday, 16 September.
What an amazing day of music-making held at Peter Moyes on Wednesday 31 August. The number of entries totalled an unprecedented 243 entrants across all ASC schools in Australia. St Mark’s entered 28 students, and they all competed admirably. Our school was represented in the finals by Taj, Everleigh, Lucien and Audrey.
Much to our delight, two St Mark’s students were awarded places, certificates and prizes. Lucien was awarded 2nd place, and Audrey was awarded 3rd place in the Integrity section of the competition, which equates to performance at the 4th/5th grade level of AMEB.
Congratulations to all students and their teachers for such an outstanding result. We look forward to 2023 with the level of development and commitment seen across all year groups this year.

Members of The Arts Society are Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 (including Old Scholars) who are interested in completing parent contribution hours supporting The Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Visual Arts and Production). The database of The Arts Society is growing, and we look forward to welcoming families to this dynamic group!
There are so many areas in which parents could commit their energy and skills, such as supporting The Arts Team and our Arts students with the assistance they require throughout the year. These can include catering for performances, eisteddfod and rehearsals; Front of House duties; set painting/dressing; general tidying of arts areas; assisting the visual arts staff with cleaning the art rooms; transport of equipment for concerts; helping set up and cater for the Visual Arts Exhibitions; costume department support, music cataloguing, backstage production support; musical instrument performance in productions and piano accompaniment to name a few!
We want creative, positive, energetic people who enjoy the company of like-minded people and have a particular interest in, or healthy curiosity about, the full range of arts experiences offered at St Mark's. It is not necessary to have a child involved in the arts to be a part of this exciting endeavour. The intention is for these relationships to be established on a foundation of mutual respect, commitment and enthusiasm for the arts to build community.
Anyone interested in joining this community, don't hesitate to get in touch with the Arts Administrator, Jaina van Reyk at artsadmin@stmarks.wa.edu.au
