The Lion's Roar - 5 May 2021

Well done to our amazing Maintenance Team, Jesper Rasmussen and Janusz Jusko, who installed 70 colourful umbrellas in the Busselton building over the Easter break. This project has been living in the imaginations and dreams of our Visual Arts staff for about a year and it is finally in place!

The Arts Team couldn’t be happier with the look of the space, which has instantly become even more uplifting, joyful and creative with the addition of the umbrellas. When you enter the Busselton building, you will see a giant child sculpture (from the 2019 Joondalup Twilight Lantern Parade) flying through a sea of colourful floating umbrellas.

The Arts Department extends their gratitude and appreciation for the very talented Maintenance team, who have installed so many artworks on the School campus over the years, with each art installation posing a very different set of complex problems which need to be solved. What a team effort! Students, staff and St Mark’s families are encouraged to visit the space.

St Mark's Anglican Community School, and Sacred Heart College, are partnering again this year to bring you an outstanding opportunity to access over 50 exhibitors in one location. These include universities, TAFE, training providers, and industry representatives. A full list of exhibitors will be made available in the next week.

To ensure this event meets COVID-19 capacity requirements, this free event will be ticketed. Parents and students can choose to attend one of two sessions, starting at 6pm and 7pm respectively. The size of the venue at Sacred Heart means there will be plenty of tickets available in both sessions, so you won't miss out!

JOIN THE PUSH FOR BETTER MENTAL HEALTH

The Year 12 Wellbeing Prefects are challenging staff, students, and the wider community to get involved with the The Push-Up Challenge. The event will run from 1st to 25th June 2021, and participants are challenged to do 3,318 push-ups over 25 days. Get fit, have fun, learn about mental health.

Here's what you need to know:

• Registering is super simple and you can do so here. Register as a participant and then you'll be asked if you want to join a team - create your own, or join the St Mark's team. It's super simple. Give it a crack!
• If your child wants to get involved, you will need to give them your permission to do so. When someone registers they select their year of birth. If that year suggests they are under 18 years of age, they will be told that they need to complete a permission slip, and will be emailed the permissions slip (which they then need to complete). Instructions are on the permission slip on what next to do, but it's basically for it to be completed correctly and then scanned (or a photo of it taken) and then emailed to the address on the permission slip.
• Get pushing! On the 1st of June it all begins. You'll be completing 3,318 push-ups over 25 days (or perhaps 20%, 50% or 75% of this). The target amount per day varies and whilst you can catch up if you fall behind, you can't get ahead. Leading up to the event we will release our brand new App which allows you to track your push-ups and see how others in your team are going too. The App is super easy to use. If you can't see it quite yet, fear not, it will be released closer to the start date.

SUSTAINABILITY SQUAD

This term, the Primary School Sustainability Squad will be making and selling bees wax food wraps. We are currently seeking donations of clean pillowcases and quilt covers to make the wraps with. If you have any spare bedding to donate, please drop this off to Junior Reception by Friday 14 May 2021.

SALVATION ARMY

This year the Primary School will again be working with the Salvation Army as part of our Learning Service Program. Our first initiative for the year will be the creation of hygiene packs to be distributed by selected students and families while on an immersion tour on the streets of Perth.

To help our Global Citizenship Council with the task of creating these male hygiene bags we are asking for donations of the following items from our Primary School community.

Items can be taken to the Junior School Year 4/5 area where Year Group collection boxes have been set up. We ask that every family contributes to this valuable cause.

Our Primary School Global Citizenship motto is ‘Be the change you want to see happen’. We ask you to please help us achieve this!

Story Dogs is a program that a number of our Year 2 students participate in to help improve their confidence and engagement with reading. Each week Mrs Fairley comes to the Year 2/3 building with her super cute and cuddly dog, Pluto. Students get to come and read to Pluto which helps them to relax and enjoy their time reading aloud. As a result of the program, we see children develop their reading confidence and literacy skills.

To raise awareness of this program we are having a WOOF (Wear Orange on Friday) day on Friday 21 May where students in Years 2 to 5 are invited to wear an item of orange clothing. If students do not have any items of orange clothing, they can bring in their favourite stuffed toy to show support for this program. To clarify, the details are as follows:

Dress: Students have the option of wearing free dress with an item of orange clothing or to bring a stuffed toy to school.

Middle and Senior School students are invited to wear a splash of red on Wednesday 19 May as part of Moyes House's 2021 fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House.

Students are encouraged to come to school in their sport uniform, or if they are a Moyes student, their House shirt, and accessorise with one red item - socks, hair ribbon etc. Gold coin donations are encouraged so that Moyes can contribute funds in support of families in need through the Ronald McDonald House Charity.

During COVID-19 restrictions Phys Ed changerooms are closed for student use. From Tuesday 4 May through to Friday 7 May, students will be able to wear their sports uniform to and from school on the days they have a scheduled class for Phys Ed, Outdoor Ed, and Dance, or if they are participating in the Running Club or CAS Sport. This applies to students from Year 6 to Year 12.

The St Mark’s English Department is happy to announce the much anticipated Lion’s Pride 2020 Book Launch has been confirmed - albeit much later than planned!

The annual publication celebrates our students’ creative writing throughout the year, and the extraordinary talent that is fostered within the English learning area.

Books are available for just $15 each, but if you order three, it will cost just $30 for the bundle. The discount for the three book special will be automatically applied at the checkout - you don't need to do a thing!

The launch will take place in the Staff Room of the Alan Cadby Senior Academic Centre on Friday 14 May, from 4pm – 5pm.

As part of their Science curriculum, Year 6 students participated in a fun activity with SciTech. Ninjas need to have excellent hunting and hiding skills. Students had the opportunity to observe, try out, and learn from a variety of amazing living things which use these skills to survive in their environment – just like ninjas!

The show was great, mixing explanation with interactive demonstrations to showcase different scientific processes, and they discovered just how relevant science is to everyday life.

Students also worked with the smallest of living things – microbes – and grew their own using agar dishes! They looked at how different environments affect things that grow, collecting and analysing soil samples, with more to learn as their experiment continues during regular classes.

It was a fantastic morning getting hands-on with science, as you will see from these great photos.

Interested in Engineering?

ECU would like to extend an invitation to Year 11 and 12 students and their parents to attend an engineering course and careers event at ECU’s School of Engineering on Friday 14 May 2021 or Friday 25 June 2021 at 4:30pm to 6:30om.

The purpose of the event is to provide information on engineering studies and to showcase why the engineering profession is a rewarding and exciting choice of career. ECU alumni speakers will share their experiences of transitioning into industry roles, and our current students will be present to speak and answer questions about their study and learning experiences at ECU. Additionally, information will be provided on ECU’s wide range of engineering course offerings, entry requirements, scholarships, and student support services. A tour of our industry-grade engineering laboratories will also be offered. Year 11 and 12 students and parents will have the opportunity to chat with academics, alumni, and current engineering students over light refreshments.

The Australian Defence Force Academy Education Award is presented annually to Year 12 students in recognition of leadership potential, and academic and sporting achievements exhibited during Year 11. The award comprises of a laptop computer and certificate for you, along with a plaque of recognition for your school. It is presented to you on behalf of the Navy, Army or Air Force if you’re one of the 120 most suitable applicants who have applied for entry to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). Applications Open for National Youth Science Forum 2022

In 2022, the NYSF will deliver a 12-day program from 10-25 January via a combination of in-person and digital STEM experiences. 2022 participants will hear keynote speakers, lectures, participate in hands-on workshops, debates, expos and enriching social activities.

WAAPA Junior Academy Courses

The WA Academy of Performing Arts has trained many of Australia’s leading performers. The Youth Theatre - School Years 10 to 12 may be of interest to Year 10s interested in careers in the theatre.

Parents are reminded that COVID-19 restrictions are still in place. As such, we request that parents limit their time on the School premises, especially during pick up and drop off times. Parents should only be on campus during School hours if they have an parent/teacher interview scheduled or other pre-arranged activity. Parents must sign in and may also be required to scan the SafeWA QR code on arrival.

Parents/Carers and all visitors must sign in at Reception. People not wearing the check-in sticker may be stopped and asked to return to Reception to sign in.

Middle and Senior School: Parents MUST sign in at Main Reception before walking to drop items off at the respective sub-school Reception offices.

Primary School: Parents must sign in at the relevant Reception (ELC or Junior School) area and not at Main Reception. People not wearing the check-in sticker may be stopped and asked to return to Reception to sign in.

When your errand is complete, please ensure you sign out, at the same location you signed in or at Main Reception.

The requirement to sign in and out is to ensure we know who is on campus in the unlikely event of an emergency. It also serves as a contact tracing tool for COVID-19. If you are on campus during an emergency or emergency drill, please follow the directions of staff wearing hi-vis vests.

Have you ever had one of ‘those’ mornings?

You’re running late, the kids are dragging their feet, and it feels like they are never going to get to school on time... and finally, when you do arrive at school, your child realises they have left their sports bag/lunch/laptop/hat/locker key at home!

To save you the run-around on ‘those’ mornings, Middle and Senior School students can...

• borrow a laptop from the IT Department for the day. It will have all the apps they need and they’ll be able to log on to their School accounts, such as Office 365, SEQTA Learn, and others.
• have funds loaded onto their Smartrider and purchase food at the Cafeteria. EFTPOS is also available (cash is not accepted in the Cafeteria).
• borrow bus fare to get home.

If, in a worst case scenario, your child in Year 10 to 12 has lost their locker key (a spare must be given to their PCG tutor), they can ask their teacher for their spare. Students in Years 6 to 9 can ask for assistance from Reception if they are having problems with their School-issued lock.

We all want our students to be independent, resilient, and organised. By encouraging the students to take responsibility, and arrange for loan items - or do without the item for the day - they learn just that!

Messages to Students

It is not always possible to get messages to students during the day, as passing on messages can be very disruptive to class time. As Middle and Senior School students may access their School email accounts at times during the day, you might also consider sending them a quick note via email.

On Wednesday 21 April, an email was sent to all parents requesting that they update their preferences for the use of their child's photograph. In order to ensure the School is managing the use of these images in accordance with the wishes of the student's parents and carers, we will be updating our records in this regard annually.

The School requests your permission to use your child’s image and schoolwork in a variety of print and online media, by way of you submitting your preferences on this form. As many parents have not yet completed the form, we have extended the deadline to Friday of this week.

Stock update

The Uniform Shop has new stock of the sports jackets and pants. Items can be purchase at any time during normal trading hours.

Please note that the Uniform Shop accepts EFTPOS only - no cash purchases. If your child needs to purchase an item, and you are not able to be there with your EFTPOS card, you do have the option of calling the Uniform Shop and providing your card details over the phone.

Students can purchase grey tights and School ties at the Cafeteria, which can be paid for via EFTPOS, or via funds loaded on to their SmartRider cards through Quickcliq.

Pre-loved Uniforms

The Uniform Shop is once again accepting good condition second-hand uniforms for sale. All sales from uniform items you bring in are credited to your account. Simply download this form, fill in the required information, and bring the form, and freshly laundered uniform items, to the Uniform Shop during regular opening hours.

If you know someone who no longer has children at the School, but who has uniform items to sell, they are also welcome to do so.

Please note: second-hand uniform items must be:

• freshly laundered, with no stains
• in good condition, with no rips or tears
• in line with current uniform standards.

Being Neighbourly

Please be mindful of our neighbours in the homes and businesses around the School. Parking in the Endeavour Business Centre (cnr of Banks and Endeavour) is restricted to clients of the Centre’s tenants. The parking areas next to the Whitfords Family Centre and Endeavour Child Care facilities are also strictly reserved for their clients. Please do not block the driveways of homes on St Marks Drive.

Student Vehicles

Older students who drive their own vehicles are not permitted to park on the School grounds.

School Parking Patrols

The City of Joondalup has advised all schools that, in an effort to provide a safer environment for everyone, City of Joondalup Officers will be conducting patrols of school parking in the mornings and afternoons throughout the school term. It is imperative that drivers are aware of this, and park in accordance with the parking conditions which apply near schools, as penalties may apply. Kiss ‘n Drive locations

There are a number of Kiss ‘n Drive drop off points around the School, including Whitfords Avenue entrance (Gate 4), Early Learning Centre (via Gate 3), Eastern Access Road (via Gate 3), and outside the Performing Arts Complex (via Gate 3 or Gate 2). There is an additional Kiss ‘n Drive bay on St Marks Drive (travelling east to west). To ensure the safety of all pedestrians, please adhere to the following:

• Kiss ‘n Drive bays are strictly ‘no parking’ areas whether or not you are in your vehicle.
• Students must exit from the passenger-side doors as quickly as possible.
• Students must use the designated crosswalks located at each Kiss ‘n Drive within the School grounds.
• Do not overtake vehicles who are ahead of you in the Kiss ‘n Drive queue.
• Please be patient, drive slowly, and be aware of other road users.
• At pick up time, if your child is not at the Kiss ‘n Drive when you arrive, please follow the Traffic Warden’s directions and move forward to rejoin the queue.

Manned Crossings

There are manned crosswalks at a number of locations. Traffic Wardens appointed by the Children’s Crossing Unit of the WA Police are located on Whitfords Avenue (Belrose Entrance), Endeavour Road (Banks Avenue), Whitfords Avenue, and on Cook Ave.

In addition, we have a School Traffic Warden located at the Kiss ‘n Drive points outside the Performing Arts Complex. Please follow the instructions of the wardens to help keep our children safe.

Walking/Riding to School

• St Mark’s encourages students to walk or ride to school where possible, and we stress the importance of using the
  roads safely. Helmets must be worn when riding to and from school, as required by law.
• Remind students to take note of the traffic around them, and be aware of other road users, including cars and pedestrians.
• Be aware that, even if a cyclist rings their bell, pedestrians may not immediately recognise it as warning of an approaching bicycle. As such, when there are pedestrians on a shared pathway, cyclists should slow down and give the pedestrian time to move to safety.
• Students are to dismount and push their bicycles at crosswalks.
• Students are not to ride their bicycles in the School grounds - they must dismount.
• Primary School students should park their bikes next to the multi-purpose court near the Primary Oval. Middle and Senior School students should park their bikes in the bike racks behind the Dunsborough buildings.

Update Your Medical Action Plans

Now is a great time to check in with the nurse to see if your child's Medical Action Plan is up to date, and to check whether medications stored at the School have reached their listed expiry date. If your child has had a recent or new diagnosis that requires a Medical Action Plan, please ensure that the Wellness is provided with a copy.

Allergy Awareness

We have a number of students with severe nut allergies (anaphylaxis) at St Mark's. We encourage all families to be 'allergy aware' and avoid sending nut-based products (including cashew nuts and peanuts) to School. Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening health condition, and our risk-minimisation strategy needs your support.

Please keep unwell children at home

Thank you to all the families who are helping us keep the School community healthy, by keeping their unwell children at home. It is essential for the health and wellbeing of our whole community - students, staff and parents - that students who are unwell be kept at home.

Healthy WA shared these tips to help prevent the spread of viruses:

• Cover coughs and sneezes with your inner elbow, or use a tissue and throw it in the bin straight away.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use antibacterial hand sanitisers, especially after coughing or sneezing.
• Clean surfaces and objects regularly such as doorknobs, keyboards, phones and toys.
• Stay at home and limit your contact with other people.

Learn more about hand hygiene and protecting yourself from viruses such as influenza.

Signs and Symptoms

Common symptoms of a cold include coughing, low-grade fever, a sore throat, sneezing and a blocked or runny nose. Colds are spread through droplets in the air – from coughs or sneezes, for example – and on surfaces.

Influenza, or 'the flu', commonly causes symptoms such as high fever, dry cough, muscle ache and fatigue. Less common symptoms include sore throat and a runny nose. Children may also have abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. It spreads from person to person through droplets in the air.

What does the WA Department of Health advise?

The WA Department of Health has the following information on their website:

Day care and school staff have a key role in preventing the transmission of diseases in day care and the school environment.

While it is often difficult to prevent the transmission of common respiratory (colds/flu) and gastroenteritis infections that occur, every effort should be made to minimise the spread of infection by encouraging:

• staff and children at school or childcare to stay at home in the early stages of illness as at this stage they can be infectious and shed the virus, bacteria or parasite through coughing, sneezing, contaminating surfaces and personal contact.
• school staff and students who are ill should not to return to work/daycare until they are symptom free if they have a cold or flu and for at least 24 hours if they have had gastroenteritis.
• staff and children at day care, healthcare workers and food handlers who have had gastroenteritis should not return to work until they are symptom free for at least 48 hours.
• parents to seek medical advice if their child has ongoing symptoms of illness.

eSports and Online Youth Program

The City of Joondalup Youth Services team have set up an online program based around eSports and Role Playing Games, called ConnectEDGE. The program was established to provide options for young people (13-25) who prefer to engage online, rather than in-person.

In Term 1, the ConnectEDGE focused on Online Dungeons and Dragons, and are focusing on Rocket League in Term 2. However, the Youth Services Team are willing to give other online games or interests a go in order to provide support and connection to those who may otherwise miss out.

The Traffic Warden State Management Unit manages all traffic warden-controlled children's crossing facilities in Western Australia. The unit is responsible for recruiting, training and assessing traffic wardens (crossing guards) as well as monitoring activities and the operation of children's crossings. Advancing the role of women in IT: Girls teaching girls how to code!

Edith Cowan believed that education was the key to growth, change, and improvement. We are proud to continue her legacy by actively advancing the role of women in science, technology, engineering, and maths through the following initiative. ECU is inviting girls from Years 7 - 12 to join us for a day of computing, creating, and collaborating.

ECU hosts four different GPN workshops over the year, catering for first time programmers and seasoned coders! With women from Perth’s IT community, you will be guided through the creation of your own game or app, meet like-minded people, and learn about the tech industry.

Congratulations to the 87 students from Years 6-12 who have been selected to be part of the 2021 ASC Concert! The audition panels had a hard time choosing from so many talented performers, and every effort was made to ensure ensembles had balanced representation from as many ASC schools as possible. The non-auditioned groups were also carefully curated to ensure balanced representation.

Students involved will have received a participation agreement outlining all rehearsals and responsibilities, which must be returned by this Friday 7 May.

Please note the ASC Reading Day has been postponed from Saturday 8 May to Saturday 12 June due to the current COVID situation in Perth.

All students have been added to a Microsoft Team called "ASC Concert 2021" and all the sheet music and practice copies will be uploaded to Files there. Please check it regularly for announcements and concert information.

The ASC Music Camp is coming up in Term 3, and is compulsory for all students involved in the concert. This is the only portion of the ASC Concert which incurs a cost for students - the Music Department is covering all other costs for the concert, including full transportation to and from rehearsals and the Perth Concert Hall in the final two weeks. The camp letter will be sent out to families today.
