STATE SWIMMING STARS

Congratulations to Luke (Year 7) and Jonathan (Year 5), who competed at the Swimming State Champs at the end of April.

Luke achieved PBs in all his races, swimming the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle, and 50m Butterfly.

Jonty achieved four PBs out of his five races, swimming the 200m Individual Medley, 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle, and 50m Backstroke. He placed 4th in WA for 200m Freestyle, 7th for 50m Freestyle and 8th in WA for 50m Backstroke.

Luke has also made the School Sports WA Aquathlon team and travels to Hervey Bay, QLD, in September for the competition.

LITTLE LEAGUE STARS

Congratulations to Year 7 students Harry and Cadel who represented Wanneroo Giants at the Little League State Championships over the Easter long weekend. Their team finished fourth overall.

This year's testing is all online and we ask that you please remind your child to ensure their electronic device is fully charged and they have a working pair of earphones with them.

On Monday morning at the Primary School assembly, Year 5 student Eloise's outstanding sculptural piece was showcased by our Head of Primary School, Mr Douglas.

Eloise's work is unique and visually appealing, and it shows innovation in the design, accuracy in the technical skill and persistence to create a resolved and well-finished piece of artwork. These attributes are directly linked to the well-known thinking tool “The Habits of Mind”. For our students, developing a “how to think” skill set early on equips them to deal with more complex problems in unfamiliar situations, which may arise later in life. Eloise's work will also be featured in Mr Davies' office this month as part of our 'Artist of the Month' series where one student’s work from Primary School is selected and celebrated.

Last week, our Primary School celebrated the hard work of several children for reading over a million words as part of our Accelerated Reading Program.

Students were blessed to learn about the impacts on our local fauna due to land cover change and habitat loss on our recent Geography Fieldwork excursion.

Geography is one of a couple of ATAR courses where getting out of the classroom and into the field is a compulsory part of the course. Students also evaluated programs like Western Shield, which are attempting to maintain the level of biodiversity in Western Australia.

We have approximately 200 St Mark’s students involved in the ASX Stock Market game this semester as part of their studies in Business and HaSS.

The game gives students $50,000 to invest in their choice of the top 300 companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Credit needs to go to Year 9 students Callum, Owen and Martin, who currently sit 1^st at St Mark’s and 9^th in WA.

With two weeks to go in the game and uncertain times ahead, it will be interesting to see if their investment strategy continues to achieve growth.

All capacity and gathering limits have been lifted, in regards to music ensembles. This means that all ensembles who were splitting into groups or alternating weeks to rehearse can now rehearse together at their usual time and place.

Based on the latest health advice, the wearing of masks is no longer a requirement. Masks are encouraged where physical distancing is not possible, and staff and students may also choose to continue to wear a mask.

Asymptomatic close contacts can return to school in line with WA Government requirements if they return a negative daily RAT and wear a mask. Parents must inform the school (including the Music Department if their child is a musician) of their child's close contact status. Please note that these close contacts will not be able to participate in music lessons or ensembles where masks would usually be removed, such as woodwind and brass players. Students should notify their ensemble director or music tutor ahead of time to discuss alternative arrangements.

The second annual Middle School Music Eisteddfod will take place in Week 4 on Thursday 19 May, from 3.30pm onwards in the Barbara Godwin Performing Arts Centre (PAC). There will be a formal adjudicator who will provide feedback to each individual performer.

Interested students in Years 6 to 8 should perform one piece of their own choice. If students learn more than one instrument, they can enter one piece on each instrument if they choose.

It is also open to small ensembles (2-4 members), but all students must be taking lessons. This is only open to students who learn an instrument with a tutor, either at St Mark's or privately. Vocalists are welcome to apply, but they must be taking lessons. Please confirm song details with your child's tutor before completing the entry form.

The entry fee for the Eisteddfod is $10 per entrant. This $10 flat fee covers multiple entries on individual instruments and ensemble entries. Piano accompaniment will be provided by Miss Leah Guelfi at no additional cost if requested, with a short rehearsal in the week prior to the event. Last Monday, our Yr 11 and 12 ATAR Art Students headed to the Art Gallery of WA for the Pulse Perspectives exhibition, which showcases the best of Yr 12 work from 2021 and The Tracks We Share, an incredible Indigenous art exhibition.

The students participated in an art analysis workshop with a gallery guide/teacher to support the written aspects of their course. They took inspiration from the artwork in the Pulse Perspectives exhibition and completed research tasks on several prominent contemporary Aboriginal artworks, demonstrating both traditional styles depicting country and others with strong commentary around issues and events relating to post-colonial indigenous experiences. These artworks, in particular, were mind-opening and tragically sad, as they reflected our dark history in the treatment of our First Nations people.

The CAS season started very early this term with our Seniors commencing on Thursday. Overall, we had a very successful start.

Senior Boys Football (Year 10-12) Mr De Bomford

With a strong group of footballers in our Year 11 and 12 cohort word spread about this so-called “super team”. We had 38 boys nominated from which Mr De Bomford took a squad of 25. The game did not go to script with St Stephen's on top, having a good lead. After half-time, the boys started to play as one and eventually took the win 7.2 (44) to St Stephen's 5.5 (35). Best on ground were Ollie and Henry.

Senior Girls Netball (Year 10-12) Mrs Berghan

What a tight tussle there was with the Senior girls netball taking on their archrival, St Stephen's. This game was close throughout with each time St Mark's looked like we were pulling away, St Stephen's fought back to equalise. The team eventually hung on by 1 point (34-33) desperately defending as St Stephen's made one last effort to level the score. The best players were our shooters, Maya and Chloe. Defensively plugging holes, Macey prevented many a forward thrust.

Senior Boys Soccer (Year 10-12) Mr Poole

The Senior boys soccer ventured away to St Stephen's. With a mix of Year 10s, 11s and 12s the boys played with plenty of energy. They squandered many opportunities but still managed to score 3 goals and kept their opposition scoreless (3-0). The best players were Otis, Mason and Ben.

Senior Girls Soccer (Year 10-12) Mrs Boss & Mr Salinas

Although the Senior girls soccer team had recruited 13 players, they were cut down by students isolating and the clash of after-school and work commitments. Unfortunately, they did not have enough players to qualify for a game. St Stephen's was also short of players, so the girls played a scratch match. Our girls put on a show led by Chloe and Tabitha. Next week, we will have our soldiers back on the pitch.

St Mark's is again looking for Parent Volunteers to assist with supervision of the upcoming Year 11 and 12 exams from 24 May - 3 June 2022.

The OSA needs volunteers to assist between 7.30am and 2.30pm for the OSA's #democracysausage fundraiser at St Mark's Anglican Community School on Election Day - Saturday 21 May. All you need to do is register for a 90-minute slot here or email community@stmarks.wa.edu.au.

You don't need to be a member of the Old Scholars' Association to volunteer, as funds raised will support initiatives for current students - though we definitely would love to see some of our past students behind the BBQ! Parents (including Old Scholars who are current parents) can claim their volunteer time as Parent Commitment Hours.

The Parents Prayer Group (PPG) will continue to meet every second Friday at 9 am this term.

The PPG meet to pray for the students, staff and school community. All are welcome.

The City of Joondalup is running its annual Defeat the Beat competition again for 2022 and is now calling for artists, be it bands, soloists, duos, DJs or hip hop artists to enter. Entries close 8 May 2022.

There are some great prizes up for grabs including studio time and photo shoots.

There are a number of conditions you must meet to enter the competition:

• Soloists or groups must be aged 12 to 18 years (inclusive);
• At least one group member resides or attends an educational institution within the City of Joondalup;
• Individuals may only represent one group or solo act;
• New and emerging entrants may be prioritised over groups who have received first place in previous Defeat the Beat competitions;
• Material and performance submitted must not contain offensive material or coarse language;

How to Enter

Soloists/Groups will need to complete the attached entry form and provide a link to their music demo. Submit your entry form and a link or copy of your music demo via email to youth.services@joondalup.wa.gov.au.
