Congratulations to the St Mark's students who represented WA at the Hockey WA Gryphon Cup over the weekend. The competition featured under-16 teams from around the world battling it out in a round-robin across three days before with a finals series on Sunday.

Well done to the following students on their selection in the various WA teams:

The 2022 Primary School Christmas Concert and Carols is fast approaching!

This year’s event will again be hosted by the Crescendo Kids and Take Note Choir. It will also feature Mr Martin’s rock band, ‘We Who Shall Not Be Named’!

Congratulations to the Year 8 students who celebrated moving from our Middle School to Senior School on Friday.

The cohort took part in a special assembly followed by an afternoon of activities to mark the end of their time in Middle School at St Mark's.

We can't wait to see these students challenge and enrich themselves as they head into Year 9 and Senior School.

Last Wednesday, our two Year 6 basketball teams were invited to Bendat Basketball stadium to compete against the best Year 6 Basketball teams in WA. Winners were invited from all around Perth and country areas.

The competition was tough, but the boys' and girls' teams competed strongly. They played four games with some tough losses, but both got a win which was a great reward for their efforts.

Special thanks to the student coaches who helped coach the teams, Anabelle, Sara, Chad and Tristan.

We are excited about next year for these teams competing in CAS competition in Term 1. Trials for these teams will be open to all students next year.

Looking for a way to reduce costs when shopping for textbooks and other items? Check out the Sustainable School Shop (SSS), and reuse and recycle!

SSS makes the buying and selling of second-hand textbooks a quick and easy process. It was first introduced at St Mark’s in 2013, and since then, over 2,500 items have been traded!

The St Mark's P&F is once again funding full membership to Sustainable School Shop for the School community. This service is most relevant to families in Middle and Senior school. Families who registered last year have had their memberships extended to November 30, 2023. Please take the time to check whether your existing listings are current.

New registrations are encouraged via www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au. Simply register your details and nominate St Mark’s Anglican Community School as the school attended.

All the St Mark’s booklists are loaded onto SSS. All you need to do is tick the items you would like to buy - or sell - secondhand, and SSS does the rest. It will show you which items are available and where and will match buyers and sellers. It really is as simple as that.

HINT: When buying and selling, be sure to compare the ISBN numbers of the books - this gives you peace of mind that you are buying/selling the correct edition of the text.

HINT: If you have any books for sale, simply search the ISBN number in SSS to see if someone else - anywhere in Australia - is looking to buy it. Why not email them and offer to send it?

Plan to reuse and recycle this year with Sustainable School Shop!

Students in all ASC Schools who are in Years 9 or 10 in 2023 are invited to apply for the service learning trip to Samoa. The trip will take place from Friday 30 June to Saturday 15 July 2023.

Please also note that there will be no lunch orders on the last two days of term, 5 and 6 December, as they will be cleaning, stocktaking and prepping for catering.

In Term 3, a group of twenty staff from IT, Administration, Facilities and Technicians participated in an event that enacted all key areas of the School's Strategic Plan. The participants strengthened the School's relationship with Grace Cafe, an Anglican organisation in Joondalup which provides meals, provisions and social connection to those in need. Grace Cafe relies solely on volunteers and donations to operate and expects to provide over 1,500 meals this year.

During the event, the group built four children's bikes, which are now being auctioned with a bike helmet by St Mark's. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to Grace Cafe.

Bids for the bikes are to be submitted by completing this form by Friday 2 December 2022. Please complete a separate response for each bike you would like to bid for.

The winning bidders will be notified on Monday 5 December 2022.

You may remember we 'sort of' introduced you to the newest member of the St Mark's community, a winged lion, and we needed our community's help to name them.

We were overwhelmed by the number of suggestions, along with the reasons behind each name. The job was just too difficult to choose just one from the amazing suggestions, so we selected a group of students to pick their Top 3 names. We need your help to choose your favourite from the Top 3.

The IT Help Desk is open until Friday 16 December 2022, after which it will close for the Christmas break. It will re-open on Tuesday 3 January. The opening hours are 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

During the holidays, please check your BYO device for any hardware or software issues (e.g. keyboard, screen, Office365 etc.). If there are issues with your device, and if it was purchased through the School HP portal, we encourage you to bring it to the Help Desk before classes resume in 2022 to ensure a hassle-free start to the year.

Subject to the availability of parts, repair may take up to 10 working days. You also have the option to contact HP Support Centre directly on 13 10 47. If you are not sure whether your HP device is still under warranty and/or accidental damage protection, you can check your status here.

Don't forget we are currently updating our photo permissions for all students in Kindy to Year 11 and require all families to submit their preferences for their child/ren. A detailed letter was emailed to all families last week, along with a reminder on the School App.

The 2022 Endeavour yearbook will be distributed to families during Term 1 of 2023. The eldest child will be given the family copy. Additional copies will be available for purchase and details regarding this will be advised in Term 1.

Emails will be sent to all parents of current Year 12s, early in 2023, with a reminder to collect their copy.

Over the last few years, the Global Citizenship Council, with the help of students and families from the Primary and ELC, have participated in a Christmas Appeal collection for the Heathridge Salvation Army. This year we have been contacted by the centre to help them in a very big way. The following items are desperately needed for families in need:

• ELC: coffee / milo / teabags
• YEAR 2: UHT full cream milk / baked beans / spaghetti / 2-mintue cup noodle bowls (you can just pour hot water into)
• YEAR 3: canned tuna/sardines/salmon, or museli bars / fruit cups
• YEAR 4: chips / biscuits / Christmas festive cookies, treats and cakes
• YEAR 5: Shadow box items for teens aged 12-14: knick-knacks, stationery items, gift cards, earrings, blocks of chocolate, mixed chocolate bags, wrapped lollies, small makeup or beauty items, hair clips and elastics, mini game boxes, small wallets or purses - please see the poster which contains example photos of shadow boxes students will be making.

The collection will run from Friday 7 November to Friday 2 December. Items are to be dropped off to the ELC or to the Primary Library Christmas Tree.

We thank you for your ongoing support of this very important cause. Over $360 was raised from our Donation Bag collection last term, and these funds have also been donated to the Heathridge Centre to buy supplies for the above appeal.

The Year 10 Drama class has its production of The Most Horrid Child of All on Thursday 1^st and Friday 2^nd December, and we’d love you to come along. Shows start at 7pm each night.

So what is the show? Well… it’s an old fashioned melodrama about what “really” happened after the Pied Piper stole all the children of Hamelin in the famous fairy tale. It’s mostly comedic and rather silly, which some juicy sentimentality at times. It’s suitable for all ages though it might be a little long for those under 8.

From 2023, all schools in the Anglican Schools Commission are required to make a change in the way their Music Tutors are classified if they are currently casual employees. For St Mark’s, this means our Music Tutors will move from casual employees to contractors next year.

Music Tuition continues to be available to students at St Mark’s for instrumental and vocal lessons. Students enrolled in lessons for 2023 will be allocated a music tutor, but music tuition fees will not be included on your school fee account. Music tuition fees will be invoiced by and payable directly to the music tutor. Music tutors will charge (excluding GST) $39 per 30-minute individual music lesson, $52 per 40-minute individual music lesson or $28 per student per 40-minute shared music lesson.

Music tuition fees are currently comprised of the tutor’s payment and a small Music Amenities levy which is for the provision of amenities for performances, ensembles, facilities and music diaries supplied by the school. In 2023, the Music Amenities levy will be charged to your Fee Account as usual, and you will see a reduction in the music lesson fee paid to your tutor as a result of removing this levy from the lesson cost.

The Music Department will continue to take enrolments and withdrawals on behalf of our Music Tutors, but each tutor will set their own terms and conditions of enrolment, including withdrawal notice periods and cut-off dates. This information will be provided to you by the Music Tutor, along with their first invoice, and must be signed and returned to the tutor. Instrument hire and music maintenance fees will continue to be charged by the school where applicable and will appear on your school fee account as usual.

As a way of encouraging excellence in education and rewarding high achievement, St Mark’s is offering a limited number of Academic Scholarships for students entering Year 6 in 2024 (current Year 4 students). Registrations for the 2024 program are now open and close on Friday 17 February 2023. The Scholarship is open to all, inclusive of current and waitlisted students, as well as to those with no current connection to the School.

Up to four Scholarships are available, with partial tuition fee remission. The number of Scholarships awarded each year and the percentage of tuition fee remission is at the discretion of the School Council.

The Scholarships are awarded based on the performance of the student in the Scholarship examination. Shortlisted candidates may also be interviewed prior to the final selection of Scholarship recipients. Scholarships will be awarded for the student's entire secondary school career at St Mark’s (Years 6 to 12), subject to ongoing review.

Our Old Scholars' Association Little Lions Playgroup is on for Term 4!

Our Little Lions Playgroup is a community-based group and is run in conjunction with Playgroup WA.

It is held every Friday during term time from 8.45am - 10.30am, and caters for children up to school age.

Calling all local artists

Entries for next year's City of Joondalup Community Art Exhibition competition will open on Monday 12 December - Monday 13 February 2023. Consider this an early heads-up to start thinking about your entry or even a chance to get started on creating your artwork.

There is a prize of $750 for the Student Award (ages 12 to 18), as well as six other monetary and commission prizes up for grabs.

The Community Art Exhibition is set to take place at Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre from Sunday 26 March - Sunday 16 April 2023.

The Sketchbook Project

The Whitford Library is going to be a library hub for Propel Youth Arts WA Sketchbook Project and students are invited to participate.

The Sketchbook Project is a collaborative and visual experience that provides an opportunity for young people to share their own personal stories and passions with the wider community across Western Australia.

Sketchbooks have provided a space for the greatest works and stories of our time to grow. Tell your own story using a sketchbook provided free of charge by Propel Youth Arts WA!

After registering, students can collect a blank sketchbook from Whitford Library in January. They will be contacted when their book is ready to collect.

They have 2 months to unleash their creativity and fill their sketchbook with their art, poetry – however they want to express themselves - before returning it to Whitford Library by the end of March.

The Sketchbooks will be displayed in a micro-exhibition at Whitford Library before being displayed at the Sketchbook Exhibition at the State Library after the KickstART Festival. Once that has wrapped up, the books go on a travelling tour around the state, visiting libraries all over WA.

The sketchbooks will be returned to students in Feb 2024.
