AMAZING ATHLETICS

What an amazing first season Year 2 student Jake has had in U7s Little Athletics! As part of the Hamersley Little Athletics trophy presentation day, he was awarded:

• Boys U7 PB Award (41 PBs over the season)
• Participation Certificate for competing in the maximum allowable events for the season
• Boys U7 Consistency Award (Champion Boy)
• O’Connor Perpetual Trophy Junior Athletes Personal Best Award

Jake's awards above were a culmination of his amazing achievements during the season in which he also received 3 x gold medals, 3 x silver medals and 1 x bronze medal.

We are thinking we have a future Olympian in our midst! Well done, Jake!

ST MARK'S STARS AT THE NIPPER CHAMPS!

The WA State Nipper Championships were held over the weekend, and our St Mark's students made an impact for Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club!

Congratulations to Gabby in Year 7 on her amazing effort at the Champs. She competed in every eligible event (14) and every final, coming home with 2 x silver medals and 1 x bronze medal!

Year 7 student Scarlett competed in five events over the weekend; she made three finals and collected two national medals. Scarlett came 7^th in the Beach Sprints Final, collected a bronze medal in the U13/14 Girls Beach Sprint Relay and a silver in the U13/14 Mixed Girls/Boys Beach Sprint Relay.

What an amazing effort from both Gabby and Scarlett! Surf life-saving superstars in the making!

What a wonderful opportunity our students were presented with on Friday! Our talented choirs, Viva Ritmo Voices and True Voices Vocal Ensemble, were invited to perform and bring joy to the amazing Telethon7 Perth beneficiaries as they celebrated the gift of giving at the Beneficiary Breakfast. We could not have been prouder of our students!

As a Telethon Ambassador School, St Mark’s choirs opened the breakfast celebration in front of an animated background of kindness drawings from our Year 3 students, and this resulted in a spectacular performance.

The giving breakfast also highlighted the organisations and people who will be helped by access to the $71.4 million raised at the last Telethon. The generosity of the Western Australian public was tremendous, and the impact on the lives of young children in this State is absolutely enormous. Mornings like these remind us just how truly blessed we are to be a part of such an amazing community and surrounded by those who give so much of themselves for the greater good.

We are sure that the children will have wonderful memories of their performance, and a massive thanks go to all staff involved in making this opportunity possible.

Photo order forms were sent home with students during the first week of Term 2. These forms are to be completed and then returned to your child’s class teacher/PCG tutor as soon as possible.

The latest fad for children is the Prime drink that has recently become available and we are sure you've seen the news hype around children rushing to purchase this product. The drink has been developed by YouTube sensation KSI and WWE wrestler Logan Paul, and while it has been available in other countries for some time, it has only been available in WA in the past week.

As this is a new fad for children we do encourage you to read the label of the Prime Hydration drink, as it clearly states that the drink is not recommended for children under 15 years of age. These recommendations are there for a valid reason.

Wow! It seems like only yesterday we were at the beginning of the year and now we are almost at the end of Term 1! Please be aware that the end of Term 1 is Thursday 6 April due to Good Friday on 7 April.

For your information, here are the term dates for 2023:

We have had some requests from our community to advise the term dates for next year. Please see below the term dates for 2024:

Term 1: Monday 29 January to Thursday 28 March
Term 2: Tuesday 16 April to Friday 21 June
Term 3: Tuesday 16 July to Friday 20 September
Term 4: Monday 7 October to Friday 6 December (the Secondary Presentation Ceremony will be held on Monday 9 December)

Key features for 2024:

• The extra week to make the three-week mid-year break is taken at the end of Term 2 in 2024, not at the beginning of Term 3 as has been our practice.
• This relocation of the third week allows for an evening of the length of Terms 2 and 3 – 10 weeks each rather than 11 and 9 weeks, respectively. This is consistent across all WA ASC schools.
• The Secondary Presentation Ceremonies are held the (school) day after the school year ends for students.

Fancy running or walking 12km with some friends, students, and teachers? St Mark's has entered a team in the HBF Run for a Reason. Please join our team for a morning of community, exercise, and fun.

Date: 21 May 2023
Time: 8am (be there at least 30 minutes early)
Start: The event starts on William St in the city near the Perth Underground station
Finish: Gloucester Park. Finishing times will vary with all hopefully finished by 10am
Transport: Students are required to find their own way to and from the run.

We have let the dust settle from last Monday’s major fundraising event for our Service Prefects, Jack Carmody and Ethan Hollander. Both boys did a phenomenal job in organising a superb day filled with many emotions for many people in our School community.

Our volunteers who shaved, cut or coloured their hair were incredibly brave and supported by wonderful students in our School community. If you see any of our brave volunteers, please congratulate them for making this commitment to raise awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff who supported the event on the day by either helping out at the bake sale, coming down to support the students as they shaved, cut or coloured their hair, and any staff who kindly donated. A big thank you to the parent helpers who kindly gave up their time to help set up and pack down the event, as well as our helpful hairdressers.

Thank you also to the Accounts team and the Maintenance team for your support on the day.

Our fundraising total is currently at $8,050.00, an outstanding achievement. Thank you to everyone in our St Mark’s community and beyond for contributing to our fundraising efforts. St Mark’s has a long-standing commitment to the Leukaemia Foundation, and it has been another successful year in raising awareness for those families dealing with blood cancer.

Our Year 6 Parent Teacher Interviews are fast approaching. These are being held on Friday 31 March between 8.30am and 4.30pm and this will be a STUDENT-FREE DAY for Year 6.

Meaning that students should stay at home for the day - so as to participate in interviews if possible.

No Year 6 classes will run for the day, including PCG time.

Please note: Those participating in NIPSSA Interschool Swimming Carnival are to follow the instructions sent via Consent2Go.

Thank you to our St Mark's community, who joined us for the P&F Sundowner and AGM last night. It was wonderful to see so many members of our St Mark’s community - both old and new.

We had a number of members nominate for committee positions last night, which was fabulous to see, and a huge thank you to those who put themselves forward. We can't do what we do without you!

We will introduce you to the new committee in the coming weeks.

In a world full of differences, our young people need to be able to view the world through different lenses.

To take this statement further, our Year 8 Extension English program students will be exploring the world of others through conversation, literature, poetry, and film. They will discover the culture, perspective, relationships, and displacement through the lenses of other people’s experiences. Their task is to create poetry walking in the footsteps of others.

In order to give our students access to these experiences, we are taking an idea from Denmark, where there are libraries in which you can borrow a person instead of a book to listen to their life story. We were hoping that there are willing participants in our community who would be able to give up to 30 minutes of their time to share their stories of how they or their families came to Australia with our students.

Our participants would need to be available on Friday 28 April from 9am to 10am at St Mark's.

With over 50 Exhibitors from a variety of sectors, there is plenty of opportunities to learn about what's on offer course-wise for uni and TAFE plus CareerLink and Apprenticeships, speak to industry representatives, check out gap year options, and discover different careers.

Held in the Alan Cadby Senior Academic Centre at St Mark's Anglican Community School, Hillarys.

Year 11 and 12 students and their parents are invited to attend our engineering courses and careers showcase event at ECU’s School of Engineering on one of the following dates:

• Wednesday 26 April 2023
• Thursday 8 June 2023
• Friday 8 September 2023

The purpose of the event is to provide information on engineering studies and to showcase why the engineering profession is a rewarding and exciting choice of career. Our alumni speakers will share their experiences of transitioning into industry roles, and our current students will be present to speak and answer questions about their study and learning experiences at ECU. Additionally, information will be provided on our wide range of engineering course offerings, entry requirements, scholarships, and student support services. A tour of our industry-grade engineering laboratories will also be offered. Year 11 and 12 students and parents will have the opportunity to chat with academics, alumni, and current engineering students over light refreshments.

By attending this event, Year 11 and 12 students will be able to gain more information about engineering study options and career pathways, as they get ready to make important decisions about the next stage of their learning journey.
