St Mark's Stars Join the School Sport WA State Teams

Charlie Notches Up 50 Games for North Beach FC

Huge congratulations to Charlie from Year 8, who played his 50th game last Sunday for the North Beach FC Tigers. Charlie kicked three goals in the final quarter, spearheading Year 8 Black's first win of the season!

Today is National Simultaneous Storytime and is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places.

We joined other schools around the country at 11.00am to read this year's chosen book, 'Family Tree' by Australian author, Josh Pyke, and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh.

Our ELC students were spoilt during this year's storytime as they had some special visitors attend. Not only did Mr Douglas, Head of Junior School, read to them, but our Story Dog, Pluto, came to listen to the story.

Our Year 6 Mandarin students have been learning about food and drink used in Chinese culture for birthday parties. On Friday, students had lots of fun making and stretching Longevity noodles. Longevity noodles symbolise long life, and it's the main food eaten for birthdays among the Chinese community. So the longer they are, the better!

Students also learned about the ingredients and methods of the noodles in Chinese characters before the noodle-making session.

The St Mark's Computer Club is back for all Years 6 - 12 students!

If you are a computer whizz or just love all things IT, then make sure you join us after school on Tuesdays 3:30 - 4:30pm in B2.

Please be advised that the St Mark's Uniform Shop is now taking pre-loved clothing.

All items must not have stains or holes and must be neatly presented. Blazers do have to be dry-cleaned and with no colours on them. No old-style garments will be taken e.g. newer font style on the garment only.

Please keep in mind that the Uniform Shop will not advise parents if their pre-loved items have not been accepted.

At the end of last year, staff participated in the first of four days of professional learning in the Berry Street Education Model. It is necessary to undertake the Days 2 and 3 of training together at the beginning of Term 3 this year.

As a result, students will not resume Term 3 until Wednesday July 27, one day later than has been published in this year’s planner.

We will remind families of this throughout Term 2.

Last Thursday, the second annual Middle School Eisteddfod took place in the Barbara Godwin Performing Arts Centre (PAC). This was the first music event for the year, and there were almost double the number of competitors from 2021; an amazing effort despite the many challenges faced with COVID-19.

The event was split into two sections, beginning with Year 7 and 8, followed by the Year 6s. Both sections included performances across a range of instruments and musical genres.

There was an incredibly high standard of music-making, with our young competitors performing with confidence and professionalism. The two adjudicators for the event were Mr Cameron van Reyk, Head of Music at Wesley College, and our very own Mrs Kristy Raymond were both very impressed by the array of talent displayed.

The following competitors have been recognised for their stand-out performances. They will be presented with these awards at the Middle School Assembly in Week 7.

The monsters have arrived!

Year 3 students have been eagerly waiting for their ceramic monsters to return from the kiln! The Year 2/3 area is now adorned with these little creatures on display and will be sent home soon.

These monsters feature the skill of creating a pinch pot and appropriate joining techniques, all of which form a basis for more complex ceramic pieces in later years.

Back in Term 1, Year 5 students embarked on the creation of these quirky animals.

They began by drawing unusual animals, morphing them to create a creature, then constructing them with recycled materials and covering them in paper mache. We also looked at Mexican Folk Art, Alebrijes.

After a few interruptions, school holidays, and commencing a new project, the creatures are finally finished!

These photos speak for themselves. Year 5s should be so proud of their unique creations. They involved complex construction techniques, accuracy and perseverance to get a resolved work of such a high standard.

Due to the rise in Covid cases, we will not be holding parent-tutor interviews in person this term but instead will offer 10-minute online interviews via Teams. This is a chance for parents to touch base with their child’s instrumental tutor, ask any questions they may have and get individual feedback on their child’s progress.

Tutors will contact the parents of their students over the coming weeks and let them know the dates/times they have available for interviews. We hope this will allow more flexibility for both our tutors and our families, particularly with so much sickness around.

The democracy sausage sizzle and cake stall is always a winner and Saturday was no different.

We can't thank our sizzling volunteers and cake makers enough for ensuring the day was a success. The OSA has raised approximately $1100 to support School initiatives.

Thank you also to those who exercised their right and purchased a sizzle or piece of cake!

After nearly a two year absence, the St Mark's Old Scholars were able to hold The Salvation Army Great Cook Up back on campus this term!

This is a fantastic initiative for a very worthy cause run by the St Mark's Old Scholars' Association.

Students from the Junior and Middle Schools came together with their parents, worked alongside each other and cooked meals for the Salvation Army. It was a great afternoon, and the kitchen was a buzz with St Mark's community spirit.

Six bain-maries were filled to the brim with amazing cooked meals (approx. 120 meals) to be served to the homeless by the Salvation Army.

Well done to all students and parents who attended the afternoon.

ASCI Hosting Information Flyer

The AVCAT scholarships, including the Long Tan Bursary, are tertiary scholarships for the children and grandchildren of Australian ex-serving veterans. Scholarships are $4000–$6000 per year for three years.
