Well done to Liam Findlay(5HUM) who was nominated to be a part the WA School Sports 12s Hockey Squad. He was not selected for the final team, but will have the opportunity to train with the squad as they prepare for the interstate competition. As one of the youngest on the team, he looks forward to another opportunity next year. Well done, Liam!
Staff Stars
St Mark's is thrilled to announce that two staff members, Mrs Tracey Toovey and Dr Deborah Netolicky, have been acknowledged for their leadership in education at the ACEL WA Awards. St Mark's was the only school to have more than one winner on the night.
Our delight was extended by the news that a colleague from fellow Anglican Schools Commission school, Peter Moyes ACS, was also acknowledged: congratulations to Ms Nicole Brown, on her ACEL WA Fellowship Award.
Tracey Toovey: The ACEL WA Teacher Leader Award for Excellence
Tracey is an outstanding Primary teacher whose roles and impact extend well beyond her own classroom. In her previous role of Year 4 Coordinator she led curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and learning spaces. She spearheaded the Year 4 camp as well as a program of environmental sustainability for Years 2-5, including a sustainability garden and embedding the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
In 2019, Tracey was recognised with a United Nations Association of Australia Western Australia
World Teachers' Day Award for her global citizenship work within the School and her partnership with the UNAAWA on award winning programs such as Changing the Way We Think: Impact of One-Use Plastic. Through this work she has empowered students to make a positive difference to their world, locally and globally, for the common good.
Now in the role of Coordinator of Enrichment, Learning Service, and Global Citizenship, Tracey leads learning enrichment in Years 2-5, Learning Service across the K-12 school, and global citizenship. She is leading a whole-school strategic project team on developing Learning Service, participating in a system-wide Service Learning Network Group, engaging with AISWA’s Purposeful Pedagogies: Global Competencies in Action project, and investigating meaningful, sustained service partnerships, scoped and sequenced from K-12.
Deborah Netolicky: The ACEL WA Certificate of Excellence in Educational Leadership
As the Head of Teaching and Learning (K-12) Deborah works to foster a shared language of practice, develop staff capacity, leverage technologies, and nurture a vibrant professional learning culture that inspires teachers to work collectively to serve students. She leads teaching and learning; cross-school, research-informed strategic staff groups; and the development of the School’s Learner Attributes, Teaching and Learning Philosophy, and Staff Development Suite. She was instrumental in developing the School’s K-12 Distance Learning Plan.
As co-author of the Education International 2020 report 'Thinking about Pedagogy in an Unfolding Pandemic', Deborah was an early contributor to making sense of education beyond the global pandemic. Her upcoming book, 'Future Alternatives for Educational Leadership: Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Democracy', brings together an impressive range of contributors who present ways to advance education into positive and democratic futures. She is also Honorary Research Associate at Murdoch University, Chair of her local primary school board, and sits on various professional networks and advisory committees.
Congratulations!

Mrs Tammy Gruber’s Year 8 Visual Arts class spent their lesson plein air drawing (i.e. outside - nature's classroom!). The students used the School grounds as inspiration to combine nature and organic shapes together with man-made or geometric shapes. They created contour drawings (single line drawings) in artline pen.
The Year 8s have researched the style of Frederick Hunderwasser and included elements of his artwork such as spirals, hidden faces, and lollipop trees. Hunderwasser painted like he was a child because he was trying to paint in a way that was not corrupted by the urge to conform, and this was the inspiration for the Year 8s efforts.
A big thank you goes out to all staff, parents and students who supported the Middle School Winter Appeal for Anglicare on Monday. Students (and staff!) in onesies, oodies and winter pjs sweltered through the 27 degree day, and then enjoyed Milo, cookies and games during Year Time.
The support for Anglicare was fantastic – a total of almost $1,700 was raised! Anglicare will be thrilled to receive such a significant donation that will go towards changing the lives of many needy families in their care.
Last week, our Year 11 ATAR Food Science students learned about the importance of fibre in the diet. Students learned the difference between soluble and insoluble fibre, and how to incorporate both types into recipes. They produced a high-fibre pasta dish and wholemeal carrot cake muffins, which both looked and tasted delicious!
PS: The recipes are also available on the School's Pinterest page, if you find the text difficult read in the images below.
Career Expo
Thank you to everyone who came along to the Careers Expo on Monday evening. If you were unable to attend the event, or would like the contact details for one of the exhibitors, the 2021 Exhibitor guide can be downloaded here.

Fete Update
The date is set! The next School Fete is set to take place on 12 March 2022 - and plans are already being set in motion to make it a fabulous day out for our community. In the coming months, we will be inviting families to support the Fete by volunteering to assist at a stall, on the Fete Committee, donating home-made preserves/cakes, growing cuttings for the plant stall, or having a clear out at home and donating goods for the Trash 'n Treasure stall.
If you are interested in being involved in the preparation phase, please contact Fete Coordinator, Wes Buzzer, at fete@stmarks.wa.edu.au.
The Fete is also seeking contacts for the hire of a Bouncy Castle and the ever popular Dunk Tank. If you have a connection that can help, please contact Wes at the above email address.
Volunteer Opportunities
Recording Parent Hours
You can log your parent hours online, at any time. The P&F recommend that you log your hours as soon as possible after completion of the task. A separate submission should be made for each activity completed. Please contact the P&F's Parent Commitment Coordinator, Mrs Sam Bean, at parentcommitment@stmarks.wa.edu.au if you have any questions regarding the Parent Commitment Hours program.
Need to check how many hours you have logged?
If you have logged hours in Term 1, 2021, but aren't sure how many you have completed, you can check your information in this PDF document. All you need to do is search the PDF for your Family Code (as shown on your Fee Statement). Please note that the document will be updated at the end of Term 2, 2021.
Have you got creative flair and a passion for books? Then our Library staff would love to hear from you!
The Library team is looking for a parent (or group of parents) who would like to assist with putting together displays in the foyer of the Tony Stopher Library and Information Centre. The display window is updated twice a term, generally with a curriculum-themed or genre-focused set up. The aim is to not only provide a bit of colour to the entry way, it also showcases the wide variety of resources available in the Library.
Past displays include: Famous photos from history, super heroes and villains, things that make you go hmmm, books take you anywhere, famous people, outdoor sports, biographies, Christmas, and heaps more!
If this sounds like something you (or you and a few friends) would enjoy planning and putting together, please get in touch by emailing smckibbin@stmarks.wa.edu.au. Parent hours are available.

Timor Leste Vision
Timor Leste Vision (TLV) is a Perth-based registered charity working directly with communities in Timor Leste, together with their sister organisation based in Dili. The people of Timor Leste have been badly affected by COVID19 plus the catastrophic flooding on 4 April. Everything was washed away. There is also a lack of water, as pipes were either destroyed or severely damaged. TLV have been working in Timor-Leste for 14 years, and have completed water and sanitation projects, a school project, library project and scholarship program, and is now running a fundraising campaign to support and deliver critical items including food, water, baby needs and other essential items for the most vulnerable in the community. Food and water, and water storage are absolute priorities at the moment. If you would like more information, please visit their crowdfunding page. Donations over $2 are tax deductable.
