HOCKEY STARS SHINE

St Mark's has shone at the State School Hockey trials over the past couple of weeks, with three of our students being selected.

Congratulations to Bailey (Year 11) on his selection into the State School 16s Boys team and Jasper (Year 11), selected as a train-on.

Year 7 student, Luke, has been selected for the Hockey Boys 12s training squad.

The State School 16s will be travelling to Hobart and the Boys 12s will head to Canberra later this year for the championships.

We're cheering you on, boys!

SCOOTING TO SUCCESS

Congratulations to Year 5 Student Magnum, who competed in the two-day Mandurah Action Sports Games Competition and came 3rd in the Beginner's Scooter category.

Well done, Magnum!

Next week, the School will be celebrating Canteen Week from 23-27 May, and our amazing team in the Cafeteria are getting into the spirit of the celebrations with some fabulous additions to the menu. We are excited to say that the delicious St Mark's Burger is back!

Some of the items include:

• Cupcakes for $1.00
• House coloured jelly
• The “St Mark’s Burger” (very popular last year)

A huge thank you to our team of Cafeteria volunteers - you are all amazing, and our Cafeteria wouldn't be the same without you!

At the end of last year, staff participated in the first of four days of professional learning in the Berry Street Education Model. It is necessary to undertake the Days 2 and 3 of training together at the beginning of Term 3 this year.

As a result, students will not resume Term 3 until Wednesday July 27, one day later than has been published in this year’s planner.

We will remind families of this throughout Term 2.

On Tuesday, all Primary School students in Pre-Primary to Year 5 took part in a fantastic Interhouse Cross Country Carnival. The students celebrated the four houses, Carnley, Challen, Moyes and Watkin. The student’s participation and energy were superb throughout the day, and their behaviour was wonderful as they all showed great support and cheered for their teammates.

In previous years Moyes has won the House Cross Country; this year, Watkins took the win, with Moyes second, Carnley third and Challen fourth! Congratulations to all the Watkins students who won points for their house by participating!

We had some exceptional performances, and these students are to be congratulated on their accomplishments and magnificent efforts. The winners and runners-up for 2022 in Years 2 - 5 are as follows:

I want to thank all the parents who supported the event from around the outside of the school. I would also like to thank the staff and the students for their effort on the day.

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY EVENTS

The top six finishers from the Interhouse Cross Country will be selected for the Regional NIPSSA Interschool Cross Country Carnival (Years 2 to 6), taking place at Mawson Park on Friday 24 June. The top five finishers from this competition will be selected to run at the 2022 Primary Champion Schools Cross Country at McGillivray Oval on Friday 12 August.

Congratulations to the winning House Moyes, with Carnley in second, Watkins third and Challen in a valiant fourth position.

Great challenges this week against Mater Dei with all teams calling on recruits to fill squads as all were affected by student absences.

Highlights were both Year 7 Girls Netball teams winning their games despite only having six players on each team!

Special mention to the Year 7 Boys Soccer team, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to lose momentum and get overrun by a Mater Dei team with lots of substitutes.

The Year 12 Outdoor Education General class completed their first expedition last week. The group travelled to Walpole, completing paddles on the Nornalup Inlet, Frankland River and Deep River.

The students demonstrated advanced paddling, navigation and leadership throughout the expedition and were exposed to a picturesque, biodiversity hot spot.

The students eagerly await their second expedition, hiking on the Cape to Cape in Term 3.

Year 8 students have been learning about plant and animal cells, specifically focusing on the structure and function of the many organelles found within cells.

On Friday, they were immersed in a 'science meets art meets food' activity where they were challenged to create edible cell models. Students selected lollies and chocolates that they thought best represented each organelle’s structure and used their selection to decorate cupcakes (cells).

We are pretty sure the nucleus and cell membrane never tasted so yummy!

This week the students have been fishing, where they have learnt about rigs, lures and bait types as part of the Year 11 Marine and Maritime Studies General syllabus.

This also complements the marine fisheries and sustainability topic the students have been working through.

Although nothing sizeable was caught – students were able to develop their fishing skills with juvenile pink snapper, tarwhine, travella and toadfish being hooked.

We are excited to announce that open rehearsals for our Year 2 String program will be coming up on Tuesday 31 May and Tuesday 21 June 2022.

This is a lovely chance to watch your child play their String instrument alongside their peers.

Due to the rise in Covid cases, we will not be holding parent-tutor interviews in person this term but instead will offer 10-minute online interviews via Teams. This is a chance for parents to touch base with their child’s instrumental tutor, ask any questions they may have and get individual feedback on their child’s progress.

Tutors will contact the parents of their students over the coming weeks and let them know the dates/times they have available for interviews. We hope this will allow more flexibility for both our tutors and our families, particularly with so much sickness around.

Year 9 Art students are drawing detailed studies of their pets to create lino block prints from these and eventually larger scale paintings on canvas.

These are the initial studies of the details for students Jesse, Lucy, Siobhan, Alesha and Jake.

This Saturday is Election Day, and voting wouldn't be the same without a democracy sausage sizzle and fundraising cake stall!

We have an official polling booth located at St Mark's ACS, and the St Mark's Old Scholars' Association are hosting the sausage sizzle and cake stall. However, we need your help by way of cake donations for the Cake Stall.

If you can help by baking a cake, batch of muffins/cupcakes, slices or biscuits, please drop your yummy baked donations to the Main School Reception on Friday 20 May before 4pm. Please ensure that the ingredients are listed so that we can include any allergy advice.

You can use your baking to claim parent commitment hours, and all funds raised will support School initiatives.
