The Lion's Roar - 17 March 2021

On Friday 12 March, one of our Year 9 students, Hannah Rowland (C9.1), represented St Mark's in the Associated & Catholic Colleges of WA's Inclusive Swimming Carnival. Hannah took out second place in two of her races - the 50m Freestyle and in the 50m Breaststroke. Congratulations, Hannah!

Also at the Carnival were our Year 9 leaders, helping out in a wide variety of ways, both in and out of the pool. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to provide support to their peers across many different schools. We are quite sure it would have been hard for the Year 9s to remain impartial while Hannah was blitzing her way through the water!

Thank you to Year 9s Cohen, Lachlan, Riley, Demi, Hayley, Jesse, Ethan, Madison, Jacob, Dylan, Eavie, Amy and Chloe, who helped out on the day.

The aim of the Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) is to provide quality sport and recreation activities that cater to all levels of student ability. The Inclusive Sports Program, of which today's Swimming Carnival is a part, is integral to the ACC efforts to provide students with a disability equitable access to sporting and recreational opportunities. The program is specifically targeted at students whose disabilities may hinder their inclusion in school-based or interschool sporting events.

This week, we celebrate cricket success, news from the Nipper Championship, an athletics win and the development of a future violin virtuoso!

Cricketing success!

Oscar Chadwick (W7.1) and his teammates at Scarborough Cricket Club won the Grand Final of the John Inverarity Shield (WACA Premier U13 District Cricket). Oscar opened the bowling for Scarborough, and took a wicket in the first over of the match. Scarborough won the Final by seven wickets, defeating Subiaco Floreat. Well done, Oscar!

Athletics Star

Madison Esquivel (CH9.2) recently competed in the WA State Track & Field Championships, winning Bronze in both Long Jump & Triple Jump. Madison will be representing WA in April at the Sydney Olympic Stadium. Congratulations, Madison!

SunSmart WA Nipper Championship

Ben Chadderton (5M), Hazel Foley (5M), Koga Haywood (5H), and Gabriella Jackson (5R) competed in the SunSmart WA State Nipper Championships at Scarborough Beach over the weekend. All are from Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club in the U10 age group. The conditions were perfect and they all did a fantastic job.

The weekend consisted of many water and beach events including beach flags and sprints, a 1km beach run, board races, swim races, team events, and an Ironman/Ironwoman. Each of them placed in the Top 10 in the State for different events, with Gabby and Hazel even taking home a Silver medal for their efforts in the Team Board Relay. Ben helped his team come 5th in their Board Relay, and Koga was a star swimmer, helping his team gain 6th place in their Surf Team event.

A busy season of Sunday mornings on the beach, and midweek board and swim training, paid off. They all showed great sportsmanship, dedication, and a lot of grit and determination, while having loads of fun with friends at the same time. They are definitely super stars in our eyes!

AMEB Awards for Excellence

In early March, Daniel Ciccullo (6.1) was presented with the 2020 AMEB Awards for Excellence for the outstanding result he achieved in Violin (Comprehensive Exam). The awards presentation ceremony was held in the Octagon Theatre at The University of Western Australia.

During the holidays, Daniel also auditioned for a place in Collegium (AMEB 4+) at WA Youth Orchestra. He has been offered the 1^st violin position and will be rehearsing at WAAPA every Saturday.

Pamela Grubb, our Director of Music, was invited to present on the weekend at one of the Kodàly Connect sessions coordinated by Kodàly WA across regional towns. Offering professional learning to music teachers in Albany, Mandurah, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, and Bunbury, this event allows music teachers in regional areas to connect with one another and access high quality classroom ideas from Kodàly inspired teachers.

Pamela is passionate about music education and has completed all three levels of the Secondary Australian Kodàly Certificate over the last two years. Just recently, Pamela presented three sessions in Albany on classroom games, activities and choral warm-ups to music teachers ranging from early childhood all the way to secondary. The feedback from the participants was very positive and the event was a great success!

Led by Pamela, our Music Department staff continue to hone their skills in Kodàly methodology, with Andrew Martin, one of our Primary Music teachers, undertaking the first level of the Primary Australian Kodàly Certificate in the Term 1 holidays.

At Monday's Middle School Assembly, two students, Dane Arcus (6.1) and Isla Cercarelli (6.4), were acknowledged for completing their Level 1 Ignite Award, a significant achievement. Congratulations!

This prestigious youth award, which is modeled on the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, is a challenging program of self-discovery for young people aged 10 to 14 years old that provides opportunities to learn valuable skills, be physically active, assist others in the community and experience adventures.

The award benefits young people by fostering positive attitudes towards learning, complementing their school curriculum, whilst also building an environment for positive engagement and interaction between young people and the community. It also promotes positive self-development and leadership skills and is a great tool for participants to transition into secondary school; hence creating responsible and motivated young people in Western Australia. We currently have over 50 students in the Middle School participating. We are enthusiastic to support students through the program, and I encourage you to discuss this with your child.

Congratulations to the team of champions who represented St Mark's and the Fathering Project down at Santiago Park on Sunday.

Maxwell Davidson in Year 2 took out the Grand Final Race with his Dad, winning them the main trophy and bringing the inaugural Interschool Billy Cart Champion shield home for St Mark’s.

St Mark's were declared overall interschool winners with the following outstanding results:

• Grand Final Race - Jeff Davidson and son, Maxwell, in Year 2.
• Time Trial - Speed and Agility - Jeff Davidson and son, Maxwell, in Year 2

Special mention (and a trophy) went to Phil Gooch (dad of Harriett in Year 1) who fractured his wrist in practice – 100% commitment!

Congratulations to all riders and their Dads for their efforts towards this fantastic event. The main winners were all the kids who got to spend quality time with their Dads. Thanks to the Fathering Project committee members, Lutz and Damon, who were heavily involved with the organisation of the event, and to all the POSTMEN for their contributions. Thanks also to Beaumaris Primary School who hosted the event.

St Mark’s is supporting yet another World’s Greatest Shave, with the 2021 event coming up on Friday 19 March. Our Service Prefects, Monique Lanham and Isabelle Matthews, are taking the lead with raising awareness to the impact blood cancer has on many Australians and their families and fundraising to support the cause.

beyondblue is an independent, not-for-profit organisation working to increase awareness and a better understanding of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression in Australia. They aim to help everyone reach their full potential and lead full and contributing lives.

Carnley is delighted to be supporting beyondblue again this year and will celebrate BLUE DAY on Tuesday 23 March.

All students will be able to wear their PE uniform (with one item of blue e.g. blue socks, blue ribbon, Carnley House shirt etc) for a gold coin donation given to their PC tutor during PCG time. Blue ribbons and butterfly messages will be for sale before School at the Floreat building, Senior Academic Centre and Middle School precinct. There will be a variety of activities in the quad at lunchtime.

The butterfly messages can be sent to friends, teachers and staff for $1 each. The Carnley team will flutter during PCG time on Blue Day to deliver the messages. All butterflies come with a lollipop.

Parent Teacher Interviews for all students in Years 6, 11 and 12 will take place on Monday 29 March. The interviews will also be offered for parents of students from all year groups (Y6-12) who are new to St Mark's in 2021. The booking link will open on Thursday 18 March at 12pm. Clicking the link prior to this time will result in an error message.

Please note that on Monday 29 March, the School will run a modified timetable for ALL students in Years 6 to 12, and they will be dismissed at 12.45pm.

Parents of students in Years 7 to 10 will have the opportunity to participate in Parent Teacher Interviews on Monday 3 May. A modified timetable and early dismissal will also be in place on that date. Parents in Years 7 to 10 will be advised in advance as to when bookings open. Bookings for this date cannot be made now - parents will be alerted as to when the link will be active for these year groups.

Mrs Michaela Hammersley-Ellis is a teacher and PhD research student from the School of Education at Edith Cowan University. She is looking into students' experiences of stress at school and what they find helps them to cope. Over the coming semester, she will be making visits to the school and hoping to talk with volunteering students in the Middle School about their experiences of stress, their coping strategies and support systems as part of her research. Earlier this month, students in Years 2 to 5 participated in Primary Interhouse Swimming Carnival at the HBF Stadium. The Carnival had a new look this year with those wanting to challenge for a spot in the Interschool Swimming Team competing at the start of the day. The big events followed, with the rest of the Primary School arriving to compete in swimming and novelty events across the pool.

Some outstandingly close racing was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience as the competitors strived to earn points for their House. There was plenty of House spirit and determination on display as the students pushed for their personal bests and persisting with great determination in strokes they found challenging. Well done to everyone!

After the results were tallied, Moyes were announced as overall winners, with Challen in second, and Carnley and Watkins ending as joint third place winners!

Applications to participate in the 2021 ASC Piano Competition close next week, and we encourage all our pianists to get involved. Entries need to be submitted to Mrs McRae by Monday 3 May.

This highly successful annual Piano Competition will be held at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School, in the Allan Shaw Centre, on Wednesday 2 June.

Any student enrolled at St Mark’s can sign up for this competition and are highly encouraged to join in, no matter whether you learn piano at St Mark's, or through an external provider. All entrants must, however, be under the guidance of a piano tutor. Please ask your child's teacher to read the instructions and decide which section is appropriate for your child.

Once this is done, with assistance from their piano teacher, contact Mrs Cathy McRae at cmcrae@stmarks.wa.edu.au with the following details:

• Score title/composer

• Diversity Section (if chosen) – short description

The ASC Concert is back this year, coming up in September 2021. This biennial concert is one of the highlights of our music calendar and brings all fourteen ASC schools from across Australia together in the Perth Concert Hall to make amazing music.

If your child would like to sign up for Concert Band, Massed Choir, String Orchestra, Percussion Group or Indigenous Student Performance Group (no auditions required), please use this link.

If your child would like to audition for Orchestra, Select Choir, Stage (Jazz) Band, Rock Band, Electronic Ensemble and/or solo parts, please read the Audition Information handbook and follow the instructions. They will need to record themself playing or singing at their best and upload it online before completing an online application form.

The audition deadline has been extended until the end of Week 7 this term, to allow everyone enough time to prepare. Successful applicants will be notified early in Term 2.

The ASC Concert is on Friday 3 September, and if you are successful in gaining a place, there will be two weeks of intensive rehearsals from Monday 23 August – Friday 3 September, including the weekend of 28-29 August and all day at the Perth Concert Hall on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 September. Rehearsals leading up to this point will be during normal ensembles (e.g. if you gain a place in the Massed Choir, we will learn the music in Secondary Choir).

State Schoolgirls AFL Team

Is your daughter interested in playing Australian Rules Football? Is she excited to improve and develop her football skills? Is she keen to represent Western Australia? Is she aged 15 years or younger (as at 31/12/21)?

If you answered “yes” to these questions, then encouraged her to try out for the 2021 State Schoolgirls AFL Team. Working closely with the WA State Academy, including having access to their full resources, girls will get a positive footballing experience and education, no matter their ability or the path they follow in the future. A Night at the Museum

The Australian Army Museum of WA presents a Night at the Museum. For the first time, the Army Museum of WA will be open at night to the public. As well a visiting the galleries, you will see volunteers in period uniform, military vehicles past and present, WWII Movietone newsreels, the new Victoria Cross gallery, flag lowering ceremony and the Australian Army Band Perth.

Friday 16 April and Saturday 17 April at the Artillery Barracks, Burt St, Fremantle, 6pm to 10pm. Tickets available online.

All parents and carers are invited to join the Parent Prayer Group, who meet every second Friday during the School term. The Prayer Group meets at 9am in the School Chapel. A big thank you to everyone who supported the St Mark's Old Scholars' Association's sausage sizzle on Election Day. It was a lovely to have number of School parents volunteering alongside our Old Scholars (including some volunteers who are both School parents AND Old Scholars!) on the day.

Despite being one of the quieter Hillarys' polling stations, the egg and bacon rolls were quickly snapped up by early morning voters, and plenty of snags were sold throughout the day.

At the Old Scholars' Association Committee Meeting last night, the Treasurer was able to confirm close to $600 was raised at the event. The funds are to be invested in the School's sustainability program, and will be used towards purchasing a pump for the Community Garden. The pump will make it easier to use the water collected in the rainwater tanks located to the side of the Art Room - great for the parents who are on the watering roster, and for the Primary School students in the Sustainability Squad.

The meeting last night was also used to confirm the Old Scholars' continued commitment to supporting the Primary School's Learning Service initiatives, by providing funds for the Cooking for the Salvos events. Dates for the 2021 events will be available soon.

A number of other activities are planned throughout the year, and the Association looks forward to sharing more information as details are finalised. While some events, such the 'Milestone Reunion' night planned for November, are designed for past students to enjoy, many activities support student and School initiatives across a wide range of year groups.
