The third round of our Intraschool Sports competition has been completed. In most competitions teams have finished their fixtures and will now play finals. With a few missing players, those who did participate gave their all and enjoyed the chance to take on their peers. The following is a review of Round 3.
Year 9/10 Senior Boys Basketball: Tuesday, Mr Salinas and Mr Lehman
Team 1 stepped up this week to get the win. Overall the Year 10s worked hard to not be upstaged by their younger Year 9 peers. Team 2 continued their winning ways to set themselves up for next week’s grand finale.
Round 3 Prize winners: Zach and Jacob
Years 9-11 Senior Girls Basketball: Tuesday, Ms Szostak
New teams were drafted, with “Team Stars” and “Beth & Co” playing off in a competitive game. The game was close early in the game but with Beth leading her chargers they were too good and pulled away to win 21-10. Special mention to Maya who filled in and teamed up with her running partner Tabitha. The early morning training sessions are paying off for Holly, who took out the payer of the match.
Round 3 Prize Winner: Holly
Years 7-12 Girls Touch Rugby: Tuesday, Mr Rowland and Mr Limpitlaw
The barometer might have said 34 degrees but if you used the beaming red glow of Mr Limpitlaw’s sweaty head, the temperature felt like it was well over 50 degrees! Thanks to some very special cameo appearances from Nic, Aiden, Rach and Mr David ‘The Annihilator’ Bailey, the scheduled games were able to go ahead as planned. On the north side of the field The Seven Disciples went head-to-head against Team Blitz, who had just come off a convincing win in Round 1. Piper crossed the line early, beaming from ear to ear. The Disciples were quick to answer back though, finding space on the wing. Both teams traded blows up to half time, where Blitz lead 5-4. The yo-yo scoring continued throughout the second half until the whistle blew with both teams having eight tries a piece. The partnership of Ella and Piper was hard to stop, and Andie showed some excellent cover defence on wing. The Seven Disciples were a tour de force of Year 12 Girls. Strong running from Molly, Sine and Breanna kept pushing the defence back. Louise put her versatility on show, switching between middle, link and wing throughout the game. Great touch footy girls!
Game 2 between Yozza and Team Beast gave some of our younger players an opportunity to show off their talents. Casey was moving like cheetah, with Sophie one of the only girls able to keep up with her. Kira was dominant for Beast and worked exceptionally well with the ball-playing Ellie. Paige put on the burners on more than one occasion, crossing for three tries. Team Yozza found working in the heat tough but put in a great effort trying to stop one of the fastest teams in the competition. Mackenzie was a standout, playing for two teams on the day! The Friday training sessions are paying off as the standard of games is well beyond the expectation of Mr Rowland.
Round 3 Prize Winners: Piper and Kira
Years 10-12 Senior Beach Volleyball: Tuesday, Mr Van Winsen, Ms Tutton and Ms McCarthy
Our Senior students are enjoying the opportunity to play games at an official centre. With some of the students developing their volleyball through the Year 11/12 PE Studies courses, and the extra training on Friday mornings, the standard of gameplay is improving each week. This week it was the Year 10s who relished the opportunity to play against their more experienced peers, often with surprising results.
Round 3 Prize winners: Josh and Nadia
Year 7/8 Boys Basketball: Wednesday, Mrs Thompson and Mrs Galjaardt
Nail biting thrillers were on the cards this round as we had two very close games. Teams 2 and 4 had won a game each going into the deciding third round, with only two points separating the teams. Team 2 managed to just get away with the win. Our two Senior students coaches, Owen and Mitchell commented on the importance of rebounding and crowned Lachie, Jaspar and Tristan as the kings of the board. Highlights came from Kye and Tyson who both made big 3-point attempts.
Round 3 Prize winners: Jasper and Charlie
Year 7/8 Girls Basketball: Wednesday, Mrs Bailey and Mrs Nicholson
With Mrs Bailey out of action this week Mrs Nicholson stepped up to organise the girls, who all battled hard in the Hall. With some team absences Team 2 struggled, but may have still done enough to play in next weeks playoff for first place. Gracie was everywhere Team 3 as the Year 7s took it the older Year 8s.
Round 3 Prize winners: Annabelle and Sara
Year 7-9 Cricket: Wednesday, Mr Davies and Mr Browner
A few soldiers down, the players got an opportunity to bat for three overs and bowl for two. There were some outstanding individual efforts with Kai leading the way with 18 runs and bowling figures of 0/1. Some of the other outstanding performers were Siobhan – eight runs, bowling 1/9, one catch and excellent fielding; Fletcher– 16 runs, bowling 1/8 from two overs; and Jack – 11 runs, bowling 0/13 from two overs. Again, Campbell umpired the game to his usual high standard. Special mention to Mr Davies who took on the role of organiser, manager, scorer lost property manager!
Round 3 Prize winner: Kai
Years 7-9 Junior Beach Volleyball: Wednesday, Mr Van Winsen, Ms McCarthy and Mrs Larsen
The Junior beach volleyballers had a change of plans, with a shortage of bus drivers meaning that they could not go to their normal venue in North Beach. Their alternative was to play at School in the undercover courts, which they didn’t mind as it meant still being able to play games. A special mention to Ms McCarthy for stepping up in Mr Van Winsen’s absence, but she did have some awesome help from Year 11 helpers/coaches in Nadia, Niamh, Molly, Sienna and Mark. Next week for their last round teams will be back on the sand!
Round 3 Prize winners: Jeffrey and Emily
Year 6 Basketball: Thursday, Mr Bastow and Ms Lee
After having the enforced bye last week our smallest ballers were full of energy. Highlights were everywhere with some amazing three pointers, great sharing and even some diving on the court. There were many close games, but none closer than when the two undefeated teams battled. Team 1 and Team 7 traded baskets until the final whistle, with the end result being a well-earned draw. Some highlights were Sydney (Team 1) getting on the scoreboard, Ethan and Theo (Team 7) lighting it up and Clementine (Team 4) getting the winning basket in a defensive 2-0 win.
