ARTISTIC ACCOLADES

Congratulations to Ashlynn (Year 11) on her inclusion in the Meta Exhibition at North Metro TAFE.

Her double-layered artwork titled “Busy Biomes” is inspired by our excursion to Perth city. Her artwork draws parallels between the busy lives of Australians in the city and the busy lives of insects in the natural world.

The exhibition showcases some of the best Perth Art students from Years 11 and 12 and you will be able to view Ashlynn’s artwork until Friday 19 August. If you are in the city, pop in and view this inspiring and youthful exhibition!

NETBALL STARS

Netball stars Evie (Year 8) and Wendy (Year 7) shone in their grand final on 31 July. Representing an undefeated Hamersley Netball Club at the 2022 Warriors Cup, the team took home the GF win for Division 3 U15.

SUPER FISH!

Well done to Year 9 student Zachary on his recent success at the State Swimming Championships. Not only has he come home with a stack of medals he also shaved 0.5 seconds off his PB for 100m Freestyle and achieved a National Open Qualifying Time for his 50m Freestyle!

FREESTYLING ROMAN

Congratulations to Year 8 student Roman, who was invited to Lunasa, the National Action Sports Academy, for three weeks on the Gold Coast to continue his BMX Freestyle Training.

After getting up early and eating his dietician-prepared meals, he completes his St Mark's school work with the Lunasa tutors and then trains for up to 8-hours a day. Roman is loving the NASA and Level-Up indoor training facilities.

As part of his training has been trying the 'Hot Sauna Cold Plunge' technique. Roman said, "staying in icey water for 4-minutes at a time is really hard".

Week 2 has been all about technique and getting used to the big ramps. Roman has practised his tail whip, spine whip, air over coping and a whip air over a 4ft ramp. Next week he hopes to work on his double barspin, air 360 with a tail whip.

Roman has even had the chance to meet Australian professional Dirt and Park Freestyle BMX rider and gold medal Olympian Logan Martin.

What a fantastic opportunity! We can't wait to hear about more of your trip when you return to school, Roman.

This month, Damian in Year 2 was celebrated for his recent creations and has two artworks on display in Mr Davies’ office. Both artworks were inspired by Australian artists and feature collage, printmaking and painting.

Damian is to be highly commended for his precision, thought, and detail he puts into his work.

Year 2 students have spent many lessons creating mixed media work for their own ‘Under the Sea’ depictions. They responded to the artwork of Indigenous Artist Melanie Hava. Melanie describes her artwork as celebrating her unique heritage, in her words: she describes herself as being “blessed to have been born into interesting and diverse cultures: my father comes from the oldest city in Austria, Enns (Upper Austria), and my mother is from the oldest cultures in the world, Aboriginal people of Australia…Reef and rainforest country are important sources for my inspiration.”

The paintings incorporate many art processes such as drawing, printmaking, collage and painting. These works are currently on display around the Primary School.

Week 5 (22 to 26 August) is BOOK WEEK! This year's theme is “Dreaming with eyes open…”

On Wednesday 24 August, the Primary School (K-Y5) will celebrate Book Week by dressing up as their favourite book character. (Kindy Turtles will dress up on Friday 26 August.)

Please talk with your child/children about characters from the books they have read this year or even some of your own favourite characters from books you have read.

Children should come to school in their chosen dress-up.

Week 6 (29 August to 2 September) is BOOK FAIR.

Once again, we will have Book Fair running in the Primary School Library. We encourage K-Y5 parents to accompany their children before or after school. It is a great time to buy some birthday and Christmas gifts! Eftpos facilities will be available in the Library for payments.

On behalf of the Middle School Heads of Year, we would like to congratulate the students who received awards in the Middle School for their academic achievements in Semester 1. The two categories were:

Academic Excellence - This award recognises students in each subject area who are identified with achieving the highest grade and outstanding performance in their cohort.

Academic Growth – This award recognises students in a subject who have shown significant growth over the course of the semester. They always try their hardest and put in an honest and consistent effort.

All Year 12 students are expected to be at school on Wednesday 19 October. They are to wear formal uniform. Students will have their final House Assembly followed by the ‘Walk of Honour’, through the school grounds, to the Chapel, where they will celebrate the end of their formal schooling with a service.

Their Celebration Day on Friday 21 October 2022 will begin with breakfast at Joondalup Resort at 7:30am followed by activities at St Mark’s. We expect that our students will be going home around midday to prepare for the formal proceedings of the Valedictory that evening.

Our Valedictory evening on Friday 21^st October for families will begin at 5:30pm and finish at approximately 7:30pm.

We will be sending more information about these events later this term.

We are running Maths Methods Prep Classes after school for those students who are looking at choosing Methods ATAR in 2023.

Mr Hunter and Mrs Rocks held their second session yesterday with over 35 Year 10 students attending to learn more about radian angle measure and exact values.

It's great to see so many students enthusiastic about learning the new and interesting mathematics coming up in Year 11.

We are pleased to advise that Gate 4 on Whitford Avenue has been reopened and is available for student drop-offs and pick-ups.

Thank you for your understanding and patience whilst the area was restricted.

Please do keep in mind that in the future, we will be replacing the affected structures, and there may be further closures to that entrance.

Hoodies for Homeless

On Thursday 11 August, the Year 11 Ambassadors have organised a 'Hoodies for Homeless' fundraiser to help raise money and awareness for those left homeless in WA.

Primary and Secondary students (Year 2 - Year 12) will be permitted to wear a hooded jumper with their normal uniform for a gold coin donation.

The Year 11 Ambassadors will also run a bake sale outside the Senior Academic Centre during lunchtime. The Street Connect bus will also be situated in the Quad to help promote and educate students on how we can help those affected by homelessness.

Anglicare Sleep Out

On Friday 12 August, our Year 11 Ambassadors will also attend the Anglicare Sleep Out Challenge held at Optus Stadium and brave the night's conditions.

During the night, students will experience what it is like to sleep on the streets. They will be subjected to waiting in long lines for rationed food, sleeping on a piece of cardboard and being constantly asked to move throughout the night.

All money raised on 11 August will go towards our Team St Mark's fundraising page on the Anglicare Sleep Out website. Please head to our fundraising page here should you wish to provide a little extra support to this worthwhile cause. Any amount, large or small, will make a difference!

Unfortunately, we are still missing a lot of gear from the Term 2 CAS season. We currently have 35 uniforms missing across all sports….. That’s equivalent to over three netball teams!

Carnley House subjected some of St Mark's staff to freezing conditions yesterday, all in the name of Fight MND.

Raising over $1000, our brave staff dressed for the occasion and took the plunge for the ice bucket challenge. Not only were the buckets full of ice cubes and icy water, but the weather also turned it on for the Big Freeze to Fight MND. Thank you to the following staff for taking up the challenge:

The Parents Prayer Group (PPG) meet fortnightly to pray for the students, staff and school community.

We will meet every second Friday 9am, starting 5 August, at the Home Coffee Bar, Ocean Reef.

On Saturday 6 August, the Symphony Orchestra and String Orchestra both performed in the WA Schools Senior Orchestra Festival, run by the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association at Churchlands Senior High School. Our students were nervous performing in the main auditorium but played beautifully and were awarded Merit Certificates.

A highlight of the performance was receiving a short masterclass afterwards from the award-winning conductor and adjudicator Jessica Gethin, which the students really enjoyed.

Thank you as well to all the parents who gave up their Saturday to come and support our musicians!

Parents and students should now be able to access our Paperly Music module through their SEQTA homepage. We anticipate having the entire term visible by the end of this week. We recommend checking the timetable the night before your child's lesson, in case there have been any changes or swaps during the week. Thank you for your patience as we implemented this new software, and we hope the rest of the term goes more smoothly.

The ASC Combined Schools Concert is one of the highlights of our music calendar and brings all fourteen ASC schools from across Australia together in the Perth Concert Hall to make amazing music every two years. The next concert will be held on Friday 31 March 2023, and information packs are now available.

Whatever your musical tastes, the ASC Combined Schools Concert has an ensemble or band for you. The open ensembles/bands (no audition required) are Concert Band, Massed Choir, String Orchestra, Percussion Group and Indigenous Student Performance Group. The auditioned ensembles/bands are Symphony Orchestra, Select Choir, Stage Band, Rock Band, HipHop Group and Solo parts. In addition, we are excited to launch the first-ever ASC Songwriter competition! Entry is open to all students currently in Years 5-11, but entry is not automatic (even for open ensembles), and you should discuss the difficulty of the repertoire with your tutor/ensemble director as a first step.

All students in Years 10 and 11 were sent information and application links for Vocational Education and Training (VET) applications, enrolments and re-enrolments for 2023 on Thursday 28 July 2022.

All applications, enrolments, and re-enrolments for Careerlink, North Metro TAFE and South Metro TAFE are due by 31 August 2022.

North and South Metro TAFEs do not accept late applications.

If any of the courses on offer are of interest, please ensure your children have their applications completed on time. Applications are to be completed at home, and the school is advised subsequently.

The Salvation Army Great Cook Up initiative is back on track again this term!

This is a fantastic initiative for a very worthy cause, run by the St Mark's Old Scholars Association once a term and gives students from Years 2 to 5 the opportunity to come together with their parents, work alongside each other and cook meals for the Salvation Army at the Alan Cadby Senior Academic Centre (Home Economics rooms in the Secondary School).

It is always a great afternoon, and the kitchen is continually a buzz with St Mark's community spirit. The St Mark’s Old Scholars Association will be providing all the food and ingredients; all you need to do is simply turn up and help prepare and cook the meals.

Members of The Arts Society are Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 (including Old Scholars) who are interested in completing parent contribution hours supporting The Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Visual Arts and Production). The database of The Arts Society is growing, and we look forward to welcoming families to this dynamic group!

There are many areas in which parents could commit their energy and skills, such as supporting The Arts Team and our Arts students with the assistance they require throughout the year. These can include

• catering for performances, eisteddfod and rehearsals
• Front of House duties
• set painting/dressing
• general tidying of arts areas
• assisting the visual arts staff with cleaning the art rooms
• transport of equipment for concerts
• helping set up and cater for the Visual Arts Exhibitions
• costume department support, music cataloguing, backstage production support
• musical instrument performance in productions and piano accompaniment

We want creative, positive, energetic volunteers who enjoy the company of like-minded people and have a particular interest in, or healthy curiosity about, the full range of arts experiences offered at St Mark’s. It is not necessary to have a child involved in the arts to be a part of this exciting endeavour. The intention is for these relationships to be established on a foundation of mutual respect, commitment and enthusiasm for the arts to build community.

Our Old Scholars' Association Little Lions Playgroup is on for Term 4!

Our Little Lions Playgroup is a community-based group and is run in conjunction with Playgroup WA.

It is held every Friday during term time from 8.45am - 10.30am, and caters for children up to school age.

Year 3 – Year 6 students are invited to design a bin sticker on how to make dogs in Joondalup proud!

Theme: Picking-up after your pet (Remind people to pick up their dog's waste with their own bags)

Competition dates: 8 August – 23 September 2022.

The winning student will receive a $50.00 visa card, and the winning design will be installed on bins in and around the City.
