The Lion's Roar - 1 September 2021

It is with great delight that we share that we were wrong to say we had three past students who were Olympians - we, do, in fact, have four! Natalie Alexander (Class of 2008) made her Olympic debut representing Australia in the Tokyo Paralympics, in the sport of Wheelchair Basketball.

While at St Mark's, Natalie was in Moyes House, and was very active in the life of the School, earning the Citizenship Prize at the 2007 Speech Night Awards. She took on the role of Prefect in her final year at St Mark's, co-chairing the Student Council. Her community commitment was further recognised by her achieving Full Colours for Community Service in 2008, and being awarded the Long Tan Leadership Award at Speech Night in the same year.

After graduating from St Mark's, Natalie earned her Bachelor of Science and Psychology at the University of Western Australia, and is now looking at building a career in speech pathology.

Although she makes her Paralympic debut this year, she has represented Australia internationally since 2011, winning the silver medal at 2011 and 2015 U25 World Championship. She was awarded a bronze medal at the 2016 Osaka Cup, to follow up from a gold medal in 2013.

Natalie had success at junior levels which the guard translated into second place finishes in the 2008 and 2009 WNWBL seasons while also winning a silver medal at the 2009 Australian Paralympic Youth Games.

A choral spectacular - We Are Family - takes place on 23 September, and will feature the choirs True Voices, Crescendo Kids, Viva Ritmo, and Take Note. This fabulous event will be a celebration of our community through song. Because we know this event will be a popular one, there will be two sessions - one at 4.30pm and one at 6.30pm.

The St Mark’s Sunday Session at Badlands Bar is back for 2021!

Cert II and III Music students will be performing at this live music venue in front of family, friends and peers, with the Year 5 Rock Band 'Raging Fire' making a special appearance. Performing in a relaxed environment like this allows students to gain real life industry experience and it is a wonderful opportunity for all performers to display their skills in front of a live audience.

Tickets: Adults $9 and Concession $6. The venue has a capacity for 500 spectators and tickets will also be available at the door. All students must be accompanied by an adult (parent/carer). You can purchase your tickets here.

The St Mark's Parents and Friends' Association is pleased to be welcoming Dr Prem Mudhan, Principal of Parnngurr Community School, as the Guest Speaker for the P&F General Meeting on Tuesday 14 September 2021.

Parnngurr is a remote West Australian Indigenous Community on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. It is the home of 150 Martu people whose ancestors have been there since the beginning of the Dreaming. The community is built in the shadow of twin hills with particular significance to the people and sits at the southern end of the Karlamilyi (Rudall River) National Park, 380kms north-east of Newman on a maintained unsealed road.

Parnngurr Community School aims to develop strong young Martu men and women by ensuring they attain educational outcomes that will provide them with a wide range of life opportunities, while valuing their Indigenous culture.

St Mark's and the Parnngurr are pleased to be working together to build relationships between the young people in both schools, and this event provides a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the two-way learning program at the School. This will be of particular interest to the Year 8 families who have expressed interest in the 2022 visit to the region.

Bookings for this free event are now open - registrations are essential. Drinks and nibbles will be served.

Parents who attend this event can claim two parent commitment hours per family.

Every student in Years 2-5 who learns an instrument (including voice) is warmly invited to enter the 2021 Primary Music Eisteddfod. Individual entrants are required to perform one piece and will receive feedback from an experienced adjudicator, and a certificate of participation. If students learn two instruments, they may enter individually for each instrument. Ensembles from any mixture of year groups are also invited to enter and may perform one piece. This is only open to students who learn an instrument with a tutor, either at St Mark's, or privately. Vocalists are welcome to apply, but they must be taking lessons. Please note: this Eisteddfod is not for students in the Year 2 String Program.

The Music Department will be holding Semester 2 Parent/Tutor Interviews on Wednesday 8 September. These interviews will allow parents to gain meaningful feedback from their child(ren)’s instrumental tutor(s). Families with students learning an instrument from Kindy to Year 12 will be given the opportunity to meet with tutors between 2.30pm and 6.30pm. All interviews are 10 minutes in length.

We encourage you to book interviews with your child’s tutor if you have any concerns about their progress, or simply wish to meet them or touch base. We strongly encourage parents of ATAR students or students undertaking exams to meet with their child’s tutor to discuss their preparation for exams. If you are unable to make this day but wish to speak to your child’s tutor, please contact them to arrange another time.

Bookings are now open, and will close on Monday 6 September. Please ensure you only book one interview timeslot per child learning an instrument.

On Thursday 26 and Friday 27 August the children of the Primary School participated in their annual Year PP-5 Interhouse Athletics Carnival. The Carnival provides an opportunity to foster the values of the School and build House spirit.

It was a chilly day, but the competition was hot! We saw some courageous performances on the track and tabloid events. It was fantastic to see all the students getting into the House spirit, inspired, no doubt, by the Olympics.

The Champion House was Moyes (1678 points), followed by Challen (1494 points), Carnley (1441 points) and Watkins (1269 points).

The Interhouse Carnival is not just for the students who are good at running, it is about giving all the children the confidence to have a go (participate). These children are to be congratulated on their accomplishments and magnificent efforts throughout the two days.

Thank you to all of the children for displaying a good attitude of having fun, being a good sport, co-operative and doing your best. Keep up the good work!

A big thank you must also go to the many parents who assisted throughout the two days, Grounds staff, Information Technology staff, Physical Education Department, Year 5 leaders, and the teachers for a very smooth and successful carnival. Such an event would not and could not happen without all them and I personally am very grateful to everyone who helped make the carnival such a success.

Y5 Students are invited to Y6 Market Day on Monday 20 September from 2.30-3.15pm. This will allow them to see one of the activities that they will be researching and planning for themselves next year. Y5 students are allowed to bring $5 to spend on the day - teachers will remind Y5 students of this nearer the time.

Y5 Poetry Slam Reminder - The Y5 Poetry slam date for all Y5 classes is Tuesday 21 September in Y5 classrooms straight after school. Siblings are welcome!

Primary School Community Garden – Fresh produce available next week (Week 7)

Next Tuesday (7 September 2021) we will be selling fresh produce from our Primary School Community Garden. Bags of produce will be $5 and will contain: rainbow chard, greens, cos lettuce, parsley, mint, rosemary and kale (straight leaf and curly). Veggies will be delivered to your child’s classroom in the Primary School, or to the Main Office for Middle and Senior School. Payments are to be made directly to Mr Mason via EFTPOS outside the Art Room on Tuesday morning before school, or after school on Tuesday in 3 Mason until 4pm. There will be interactive tours of our state-of-the-art laboratories and an opportunity to meet with dynamic, industry-experienced lecturers as well as current students. Based at our Joondalup campus, the School of Medical and Health Sciences provides a stimulating and supportive learning environment for our students. This includes purpose-built occupational therapy and nutrition-related laboratories and exercise testing facilities that are regularly used by elite athletes and high performance sports teams.

ECU Creative Arts Portfolio Entry for School Leavers

Creative potential cannot always be captured by an ATAR score. ECU’s School of Arts and Humanities has developed a new strand of the university’s experience-based entry pathway to enable eligible school leavers to gain entry into our Bachelor of Design, Arts, or Media & Communication, in majors such as Photomedia, Screen Production, Visual Arts, Fashion, Visual & Spatial Design or Games and Interactive Design.

Minimum requirements are Year 12 English General minimum grade of A or equivalent, with a minimum of 1 ATAR course and 3 General courses with at least one in an area related to your major. Applicants who can demonstrate the technical and creative potential to be successful through an application including a digital portfolio will be selected for interview with a view to commencing studies in 2022.

Enabling Programs @UWA

Students will be eligible to study a bachelor degree once they’ve successfully completed a graded Australian University Enabling Program that satisfies our entry requirements with an average of 65%. Students completing one of these programs as part of WACE and attending a Broadway school will only require a 60% average. Good University Guide

All year 12s who plan to go to university or TAFE should register for news about scholarships through the Good Universities Guide

The Girls' Programming Network (GPN) is a program developed and run by girls for girls. GPN is a unique opportunity to make friends, meet people who have similar interests, and learn about the tech industry. The Term 4 event is targeted at girls in Years 6-12 interested in learning how to program or improve their coding skills. A day where they will learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. No coding experience is required as the GPN Team (also all girls!) will be teaching them the skills they need, and by the end of the day, our future female tech gurus will have made a small but satisfying program!

Each term is different, each workshop is different, but what is the same, is that we do this all in python! Join GPN for a fun day learning new things, playing games, and meeting new people (but no boys!).

Location: ECU Joondalup campus - School of Science Building 18. GPB will be working out of the computer labs located on Level 2 (take the lift or stairs to the second floor). Registrations will also be on the first floor.

Our Year 11 and 12 Art students (General and ATAR) spent time in Perth to visit Central-North Metropolitan TAFE. This is an amazing ARTS campus and the students had an opportunity to see all of the arts studios in action, from Fashion, Product and Screen design, to Drawing, Sculpture and Ceramic studios. The META art show was also on in the campus gallery, which was enjoyed by all. Following this, the students moved on to view and be inspired by the Pulse Perspectives Art Exhibition at the Art Gallery of WA, showcasing the best of Year 12 Art from 2020.

The Secondary Interhouse Athletics Carnival was another great day out, with some fantastic performances on the track and on the field. We are please to confirm that the winner for 2021 is... Moyes, followed by Carnley in second, Watkins in third and Challen in fourth.

Congratulations to everyone who participated - it was fantastic to see the level of support from our students.

The Annual House Performance Night is back, and this time, can be shared with families! Last year's public performances were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, so we are delighted that parents and carers can come along and watch! The night will include performances from Senior School and Middle School House Dance, House Drama, House Band and House Glee!

NORTHERN LIGHTS MUSIC

The Northern Lights Music group would like to extend an invitation to students, teachers, and school alumni to join in and make some music. Northern Lights consists of two multi-level, multi age orchestras based in Heathridge. Northern Lights provides opportunities for those who would like an extra opportunity, as well as being a place for graduates, teachers, parents and friends.
