TAKING ON THE CHANNEL

Year 11 student, Indi, completed the Rottnest Channel Swim on the weekend for the second year running; however, this time, taking on the challenge as a duo!

The two girls came in third place in their age group and sixth overall duo in a time of 5.02 hours.

A fantastic day and an amazing achievement for the girls and their support crew.

TENNIS CHAMP

Well done to Year 12 student, Cian, on being selected to represent Western Australia in the 2023 Pizzey Cup Tennis Championship. This team will be competing at the School Sport Australia National Championships in Canberra, ACT in May.

STARRING STAFF

Congratulations to a number of our amazing staff members on their appointments as part of School Sports WA:

Mr Seb Salinas has been appointed as Boys Manager to the School Sport WA Basketball 16s Team for 2023. He will be joining the team at the Australia National Championships in August.

Mr John Simmons has been appointed as Assistant Coach to the School Sport WA AFL 15s Boys Team for 2023. This team will be competing in the School Sport Australia National Championships in Ballarat in July.

Mr Michael Barton has been appointed as Coach to the School Sport WA AFL 12s Boys Team for 2023. This team will be competing in the School Sport Australia National Championships in Lavington in August.

A NEW DEACON

Congratulations to our very own Middle School Chaplain, Mr Mark Davis, on his ordination last week. Mark was ordained as a Deacon along with three others at St George's Cathedral. It was a wonderful celebration of service and love.

A huge thank you to our Parents and Caregivers who have jumped in to help our students and teachers as we zoom into Term 1.

So far this year, we have enlisted your help to teach Mandarin, cover books, organise the lost property, cook the BBQ, bake, assemble furniture, set-up/pack-down events, and organise our swimming caps, just to name a few.

A massive thank you to everyone - whilst you may think it's just a way to get your Parent Commitment Hours, your help really does make a huge impact on our School.

The Languages Department invites all students to participate in the Education Perfect Global Languages Championship 2023!

The Championships run from Tuesday 7 March 2pm (WST) until Tuesday 14 March 2023 2pm (WST). All EP Languages are included in the event, and students from all years are warmly invited to participate.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to have fun celebrating language learning with peers from over 2,000 schools worldwide!

We have been informed of a number of traffic and road safety incidents involving our St Mark's community.

Please ensure that when parking along St Marks Drive that all driveways are kept clear and you only park in designated carbays not along the kerbing. On-street parking, including the Kiss and Drive facility on St Marks Drive, is subject to the City of Joondalup's bylaws.

Please find below a general reminder about on and around campus road safety:

• Do not ‘park’ in the Kiss n Ride pick-up zones. If your child is not at the pick-up zone, then continue forward and rejoin the queue for another lap. This gives time for children to make their way to the location.
• There is no pedestrian access through Gate 3 next to the ELC. The pedestrian access from Endeavour Road is located between the ELC and the Whitford Family Centre.
• Please do not double park at any location, including (but not limited to): Kiss ‘n Drive points, St Marks Drive, School parking lots, access gates and across our neighbours’ driveways.
• Please do not overtake stationary cars on the School grounds, especially in Kiss ‘n Drive zones.
• When exiting the School grounds, please ensure you look both left and right carefully before re-entering St Marks Dr, particularly around our neighbour’s driveways.
• Please do not park in the following neighbouring businesses when dropping off/collecting children or when attending school-based events:
  
  • Endeavour Centre (cnr Endeavour and Banks Ave)
  • Whitford Business Centre (Mitre 10, Better Pets, AutoMasters, SuperCheap)
  • Endeavour Childcare and Whitford Family Centre

Our 'Back to School Guide' has some guidance around traffic management around the school. The most important aspect, though, is to be patient and mindful of the young children present, as well as be considerate of other drivers and families.

Several incidents involving our students and their eRideables have been brought to our attention, and we are becoming increasingly concerned about their use.

Please talk to your children regarding their use of these vehicles and road safety, along with taking care of themselves and other community members they come across when riding. Please remind them to be safe and courteous at all times when riding.

Please note the following for bicycles/scooters/eRideables on School Grounds:

• Helmets must be worn when riding to and from School, as required by law.
• Remind students to take note of the traffic around them and be aware of other road users, including cars and pedestrians. Even if a cyclist rings their bell, pedestrians may not immediately recognise it as a warning of an approaching bicycle. As such, when pedestrians are on a shared pathway, cyclists should slow down and give the pedestrian time to move to safety.
• Students are not to ride their bicycles/scooters/eRideables on the School grounds - they must dismount and walk them.
• Primary School students should park their bicycles/scooters/eRideables next to the multi-purpose court near the Primary Oval. Middle and Senior School students should park their bicycles/scooters/eRideables in the bike racks behind the Dunsborough buildings.
• The above bicycle rules also apply to skateboards and push-scooters, including any e-rideable versions. They are not to be used within School grounds, and all relevant WA legislation regarding their use, including age restrictions, apply.
• The School takes no responsibility for lost or stolen bicycles, skateboards and push-scooters, including e-ridable versions. Students should ensure these items are secured safely and with sturdy locks.

The below information is taken from the Road Safety Commission regarding new rules for eRideables

WHAT ARE THE NEW ERIDEABLE RULES?

What is considered an eRideable?

• A small electric rideable device with at least one wheel
• Is less than 125cm long, 70cm wide and 135cm high
• Is 25kg or less and not capable of travelling faster than 25km/h on level ground

Where can I ride my eRideable?

• eRideables can be ridden on:

1. footpaths
2. bicycle paths
3. shared paths
4. local roads without centre lines and a speed limit of 50km/h or less

• They may be ridden in bicycle lanes, but only on roads with a speed limit of 50km/h or less
• eRiders and cyclists no longer need to dismount at pedestrian crossings and can simply ride across. This new rule applies when the rider enters the crossing from the connected path and not the road. Riders must not exceed 10km/h and give way to any pedestrians when riding over the crossing.

Where can’t I ride my eRideable?

It is illegal to ride an eRideable on:

• A carriageway with a dividing line
• A carriageway with a speed limit exceeding 50km/h
• A one-way carriageway with more than one marked lane

How fast can I travel on my eRideable?

• eRideables ridden on footpaths can be ridden up to 10km/h
• eRideables ridden on bicycle paths shared paths, and local roads can be ridden up to 25km/h

What safety equipment is required when using an eRideable?

• eRiders must wear an approved helmet
• eRiders must have lights and reflectors when riding at night
• Where possible, a bell or other warning device must be fitted to the eRideable and sounded when approaching pedestrians

Can I use my mobile phone?
You must not touch or use a mobile phone when on an eRideable.

Minimum age

• eRiders must be a minimum of 16 years of age
• Children under 16 are permitted to ride low-powered electric scooters which do not exceed 200w or 10km/h

We have been informed that the traffic warden employed by the Police Children’s Crossing Unit is NOT AVAILABLE at the designated children's crossing on Whitfords Avenue, near Belrose Entrance on the morning of Thursday 2 March 2023.

Please be extremely vigilant when crossing the road on Thursday morning, as no traffic wardens will be present.

The Secondary Assistance Scheme is available to parents/guardians with children enrolled in Years 7 to 12 who hold an eligible concession card (a Pensioner Concession Card or a Health Care Card).

The Secondary Assistance Scheme comprises of an Education Program Allowance of $235 which is paid to the school and a Clothing Allowance of $115 that is paid to the parent.

Applications open at the commencement of Term 1 2023 and close on 6 April 2023. Forms are available from Main Reception during Term 1 between 8am and 4pm.

Our Year 10 students are hoping you will continue to support one of our projects just like you did in 2022.

We ask that you please continue collecting your PLASTIC BREAD TAGS (not cardboard ones). We hope to collect as many as possible over the next three terms. The plastic bread tags collected will be recycled locally, raising funds to buy wheelchairs for disadvantaged people, mainly in South Africa.

Our Year 5 students have been very fortunate to have author Deb Fitzpatrick in residence last week. Perth writer, Deb, has written six novels, for children/young adults (90 Packets of Instant Noodles, The Amazing Spencer Gray, The Spectacular Spencer Gray, Have you Seen Ally Queen? At My Door & The Break). During her week with us, she ran a number of workshops with our students where, she inspired many of our young writers, and amazed our teachers in her ability to bring out the best in our students.

A true joy for any teacher is to have their students totally immersed and fully engaged in their own learning. This was the gift the Year 5 staff received this week, when Deb Fitzpatrick, author in residence, entered the Year 5 classrooms. Within minutes of meeting the students, she had brought her books to life and effortlessly connected with each student, as she shared her storylines and details about the characters that lay within them.

As educators, we want our students to think and write as ‘authors’, and to have Deb working alongside the children, helping them to bring their writing prowess to the fore, was pure magic! Deb told the students that she was about their age when a teacher saw merit in her work and encouraged her to keep on with her writing. Deb then set about providing informative feedback to our students, carefully structuring questions that would help them to further refine their own work, whilst pondering on what makes a good narrative. Deb enabled the students to see a true sense of value in their own work and ensured that they knew there wasn’t just one way to write a good story. They were free to bring their own style and interests to the page. A wonderful week of writing, guided by one of the masters in the craft. In the words of more than one of our students, “ I feel inspired!” Thank you, Deb Fitzpatrick. We are all inspired!

Thank you, Deb for the work you have done with our students with week. Seeing their creativity and watching them develop a love of writing has been wonderful. Most of all, it has been wonderful to see that they know they, too, can enjoy the writing process.

Year 4 students began the year by delving into the bright and colourful world of POP ART!

In 1983 Warhol used his celebrity status as an artist to draw attention to endangered animals. He made the animals big and bold, much like his famous Marilyn Monroe and Campbell’s Soup Can prints. Students first completed observational drawing with an emphasis on correct proportion, then added areas of block colour and contour line.

We think Andy Warhol would certainly approve of these celebrity animals!

All Year 6 students will be signed up to DiGii Social. DiGii Social is a digital-life training platform providing learning opportunities and safety information for students to help keep them safe and protected in their digital life. What a day our students had at the Girls Programming Network over the weekend.

Our four students, Summer (Y10), Mackenzie (Y9), Jaimie (Y9) and Trinity (Y9) were part of the 106 participants who were spread across four full rooms at ECU all coding their Flappy Bird game. The rooms were busy, loud and energetic. A great day was had by all.

We can't wait for the next one!

Over 30 Year 11 students attended the Anglicare WA Ambassador Launch at Christ Church Grammar.

After a presentation from Anglicare WA, the Ambassadors had the opportunity to chat with the people who run and coordinate the Street Connect Bus, which helps with youth homelessness. They also enjoyed meeting ambassadors from the 15 other schools involved with the program.

The St Mark’s Ambassadors will hold several fundraisers for Anglicare WA this year and participate in the School Sleep Out at Optus Stadium in Term 3.

Students in the Year 12 PE Studies ATAR course recently visited the WAIS High-Performance Centre as part of their research into the exercise physiology unit.

Some students participated in a testing lab that had them exercise in extreme heat and altitude conditions. They also had a tour of the WAIS facility from one of the scholarship athletes, who showed them the strength and conditioning area, recovery pools and the athletes' kitchen.

One of the day's highlights was Mr Salinas getting the quickest time on the reaction board.

The day finished with a nutrition presentation from the lead WAIS nutritionist.

The Christian Leaders Scholarship helps cultivate meritorious young Christians to be the next generation of leaders. The Scholarship is offered by a group of Christian leaders in their personal capacity to promote Christians making a positive impact in our society.

The scholarship is open to students commencing full-time university studies in 2024; and students currently in their first year of university studies. Applications to the Scholarship are currently open and will be evaluated as they are received. The Scholarship may be awarded to worthy applicant(s) before the closing date on Sunday 4 June 2023.

These events are for high school students in Years 7-9, their parents/guardians and teachers. Each of our Women in STEM Mentors will give a short 5-minute presentation about their studies, career journey, and day-to-day work life, followed by an opportunity for students to ask questions in a facilitated panel discussion.

North Metro TAFE Midland Campus to become Renewables Training Hub

The Midland TAFE Campus is installing a wind turbine and working at heights tower, as well as training equipment upgrades for the MetroNet Trade Training Centre. The Training Centre is WA’s first dedicated facility to support training for the rail industry and will equip local people with the skills needed to build and operate rail in Western Australia.

Certificate II with no OLNA requirements

North Metropolitan TAFE is promoting a wide range of Certificate II courses that do not require applicants to have passed OLNA.

A Cert II can lead to a pre-apprenticeship. Contact North Metro TAFE for information.

National Youth Science Forum Newsletter

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a not-for-profit organisation that runs a number of programs to encourage young people in their passion for science. University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) 2023 Registrations Open on 1 March 2023

If you are looking at studying medicine at university, you may be aware of the University Clinical Aptitude Test or UCAT. The UCAT is a computer-based admissions test used by the UCAT ANZ Consortium of universities in Australia and New Zealand for their medical, dental and clinical science degree programs.

The test helps universities to select applicants with the most appropriate abilities and professional behaviours required for new doctors and dentists to be successful in their clinical careers. It is used in collaboration with other admissions processes such as interviews and academic qualifications.

To gain entry into medicine at Curtin University or through the UWA Assured Pathway to Medicine and Dentistry, you will need:

• High ATAR scores
• complete UCAT test
• complete the interview process

The UCAT testing takes place in July, and you can register now. Applications close on 17 May 2023.

Gap Year Opportunity – AgCareer Start

During COVID lockdowns, backpackers from all over the world couldn’t come to Australia, and to resolve this skills shortage, the Government set up AgCAREERSTART, a program designed to address the worker crisis by introducing Australian school leavers to a variety of careers in agriculture.

If you’re 17-25, this unique gap-year program provides you with a paid job, training and development, not to mention the opportunity to build your networks within the agriculture industry. Applicants can indicate which farm type they’d prefer from a wide variety and also where in Australia they would ideally like to go. A matching process is undertaken to ensure participants are assigned to the type of farms that match their interests and skills.

It includes:

• Information about skills emerging and the types of skills that can be transferred between occupations

Each year, Australian students have the opportunity to live and study for a year abroad through the Rotary Youth Exchange program.

Applicants must be between the ages of 15 – 18 years on 1 January of the year of departure from Australia. If you are just 15, consider planning to apply next year. Applications for 2023 close on 31 March 2023.

Western Australia is experiencing a shortage of pharmacists. For many years we have relied on other countries to meet our need for these highly skilled healthcare professionals, and COVID has stopped this flow.

The demand for pharmacists is significant and unlikely to stop even when overseas-trained pharmacists return to boost our workforce. If this sounds like an area you'd like to head into after St Mark's, you can study pharmacy in Western Australia at:

• Curtin University
  Curtin University has an ATAR entry requirement of 80, and prerequisites include Chemistry and Maths Applications. They would also like you to have Human Biology or Biology, but these aren’t essential.
• The University of Western Australia
  This is a post-graduate degree. To be considered for a place, you must have ATAR Chemistry, Maths Applications or higher and university-level microbiology and pharmacology.

The Education Access Scheme (EAS) is aimed at applicants who want to go to university but have had unfortunate circumstances that may have affected their Year 11/12 level study.

Circumstances can include:

• Moving house at crucial times throughout Year 12
• Family disruption like divorce or a death in the family, or a significant illness
• Personal health issues

To have an Access application approved, you will need to provide evidence. For examples of the sorts of evidence, you can provide HERE.

Did you know that our Old Scholars' Association Little Lions Playgroup is run on-site every Friday during term time? We'd love to see your little cub there this Friday!

Join us from 8.45 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. for lots of fun and games. Little Lions Playgroup is a community-based group run in conjunction with Playgroup WA and caters for children up to school age. Families attending our Kindy and not in session on Fridays are more than welcome to join as well.

There is less than two weeks until St Mark's hosts the Annual Billy Cart Derby for dads and kids against neighbouring schools!

Schools involved in The Fathering Project within the local area are invited to compete for a range of awards and prizes. Caitlin Collins will attend to open the event, as well as Officers from Hillarys Police Station to speed-check the carts.

We are looking for a maximum of 30 teams of Dads/Father Figures and their associated St Mark's kids to build a billy cart in preparation for the event on Sunday 26 March.

The Derby will be held on the Senior Oval from 12-5 pm.

Local schools with a Fathering Project Dads Group competing against us are:

The event is open to students in Years 1-6, and all teams must book to pay the Entry Fee of $20 per cart.
